Early 2000's transoms

Hello! I have a '00 228 Seafarer that we are looking to upgrade to a Marlin or a 282 Sailfish(?) Ive scoured posts here and read a few things about heavier weight possibly due to beefed up transoms when heavier 4 strokes became more popular... Sailfish starting in '02 and up. I know a ton of boats repowering with 4 strokes, are transoms holding up? Or should I stick with '02 and up, what about the Marlin transoms? We live in RI and rarely go further than between Block Island and Long Island, so not in crazy offshore seas. Anything else year wise I should be aiming for? Deciding between the 2 models, and if I want to have a newer great shape hull with 1k + hours knowing ill need to repower eventually, or finding an already repowered but older hull. Budget is tight but do-able from what I have seen. Thanks!!

The condition of the transom is the most important issue.
As long as you don't exceed the maximum rated power you will be OK. The added weight of 4 strokes might be an issue on something like a 228 but the Marlin is a much bigger boat and the extra weight shouldn't make a big difference

i have a 263 chase. there are a couple spots in the transom the moisture meter found (previous owner did not take care of the bang cap) and i have twin F250s on it. the transom is strong, no cracking, no flex, and taps well.

So far as I know, the changes were to add bouyancy to the stern to accomodate heavier 4 strokes. They did that thru changes in the hull design/running surface. They did away with 22 degree hulls and went to 20. They got rid of bolt on brackets and extended the running surface. they raised the hieght of the scuppers.

As far as max HP, I think the first Yamaha 2 stroke 300 was 2003? So before that they never would have rated it 600HP even if it could handle it. The New 4 strokes were at 225 at that point?

I have an 04 Sailfish and was worried about my transom because of thedisintegrating bang cap. I had the bang cap replaced last year and the dealer said it was solid and no signs of rot or moisture. They sealed it with glass and installed a vinyl bang cap over it. The key is to ensure the bang caps have been sealed often as they begin to deteriorate. 4.2 L F250 are a great package o nthe Sailfish.

caulking mine was one of the first things i did after i got my boat
