F250 Possible sale

Gi Guys:
I am thinking of repowering my 228 that has a perfectly good 3.3 liter F250 with a little over 850 hours ( with half in freshwater) and it has been immaculately maintained. I have my reasons for wanting the 4.2 liter 250 even though my 250 is in fine shape. I called mid carolina marine and they are willing to give me at least $5,000k on trade in but looking online at the value of the motor it is really around $10K to a high of $12K. So, would anyone here be interested in a 2008 F250 motor? I can provide all service records to her and know my boat spends most of its time putting around Lake Fontana in the Great Smoky Mountains. My only problem is getting said motor to anybody that might be interested. I guess we could work that out. I am floating this idea out there. If i make my move I want to do so before the Yamaha sales event ends in March. I am likely going to keep my mechanical controls because I can save $4k on the fly by wire ones now offered, unless folks here can talk me into the value of the $4k controls. Thanks.

$5K for a perfectly running F250 seems light to me. I think you can shop around and do better.

I'd look at some of the higher volume Yamaha dealers around the SE....Hickory Bluff Marine in Brunswick GA; Vero Marine; Palm Beach Outboards....the guys that do a lot of repower work. I'd also make a call to Bay Marine here in ATL and ask for Greg....

Finally - if you want to repower with a Zuke, there are some great deals right now...and you could put one of those white AP300s on it :grin:

There's a bigger picture here.
I'm not affiliated in any way with the marine industry and I'll admit I'll make my own best effort to beat down a price but I have to agree with the marinas offer.
$10,000-$12,000 is a best price guide for resale, but you or the marina never get it. In reality who doesn't wheel and deal when they buy anything used? If you buy used its because its what you can afford. In the real world and in today's economy that motor would eventually resale for about $8,000.
And that's after time has been spent servicing the engine prior to sale. No mater what the service history has been any dealership with any sense will do this to avoid any possible chance for issue after the sale is made. Not to mention safeguarding their reputation.
I'd say at the end of the week after the employees, lease, electric, etc... gets paid the dealer be lucky to see $500.00 profit on that trade.
Laying out $5,000 to turn $500 profit seems fair to me.

Likely to take a good hit on the motor. I'd get is scoped before I do anything and make sure the mid section is ok. You'll prob be lucky to get $7K.

It's interesting that you're thinking about repowering. I'm going through the same thought process now that the warrantee on my 2008 F250 (purchased in 2010) runs out in March.

Here's a couple of points:

1. You can't use your existing gauges and controls if you go to a 4.2 L F250. They only come with the digital controls. They still sell the older 3.3 L engine that uses mechanical controls. That's your only option if you want to use your old controls and gauges.

2. The bigger block F250 gets about 10% lower fuel economy vs the 3.3 on most hulls. The guys around here that have boats with similar hulls to the 22' Grady get just under 3 mpg at cruise. My 3.3 gets 3.2 mpg at cruise. There is no replacement for displacement, but you have to feed those cubic inches.

3. A used 2008 F250 in good shape that has recently been scoped and has no corrosion sells for about $7000 around here.

4. If my F250 was to blow up, the engine is still worth $3000 on a trade in because of the value of the used parts.

So when I do the math, I have a hard time talking myself into trading in my good running engine right now.

I think the corrosion issues were long gone by 2008. Spring time in Northeast would probably get you 8-10,000 for that motor with controls and prop.

I agree that the corrosion issue has not been a problem on engines built after mid 2007. But nobody with any knowledge will by one of those engines unless they have been scoped. I keep a picture of mine from the 500 hr service in case that I want to sell it. It's stamped Oct. 2007 and has no corrosion.

Yup ! you can definitely see if a motor has the corrosion issue. Stick a flashlight up the exhaust tube. The corrosion issue are ugly- saw it on a friends of 04 225.
