I can find little info about the 1 cyl 3KW genny in my bilge. The owners manual is pretty sparse. Internet has been cloudy to my queries. So far I have figured out the power for the control panel comes from a fuse on a bar near some relays (25 or 30A). And there's a low oil float that shuts her down in case of low oil, takes awhile after adding new oil to crank her up to get her to believe it is OK.

I'd like to know a lot more. Like the maximum rating for this unit. And why it randomly shuts down. And why I've replaced the control panel fuse 3X... makes me worried. And what kind of oil to put in her.

Anyone able to point me in the right direction on the web, or simply share your observations about this little fella?

Those FPs are great. Almost everyone us using them these days for many reasons. It should be a 4.2K as mine is. I believe they tame 30w oil but it should say in the manual. If it is blowing fuses you will need someone to check things out. Make sure your water is filled (mine uses fresh but that changed at some point).

You can power most systems on the boat with 4.2K. Just add up the wattages but unless you have a hairdryer running with the a/c and everything else you should be fine.

I agree that you should have someone look at your genset to determine why it is shutting down.

There used to be a really informative FP Owners Forum with lots of tips, etc. but it seems to have moved to a new site. In Google search for "Fischer Panda Owners Forum" to check it out. Not sure if the previous info. in the old site transferred over though. In my reading of the old site, below are my summarized notes:

1. Call FP Customer Support in Florida at 1-954-462-2800. I have found them to be very helpful. My notes show two guys are great: Jeff Till or Jim Gagnon. Jeff's e-mail is "JTill@fischerpanda.com"
2. Use only Diesel oil (not oil for gas engines). My FP takes only 1.75 quarts as I recall.
3. I was told by FP that the relay fuses wear out and require changing. Buy spares and don't be surprised to have to change them every other year. These are the black square ones with easy access once you take the covers off. They are interchangeable (ask me how I know!). No big deal if you have spares on board. The PN for these relays is HE66134. You can purchase them off the FP website. Not cheap but you need them!
4. Run your genset often! Worst thing you can do is let it sit for long durations. I don't run mine enough either but I try my best.
5. Be extra careful to open the genset seacock prior to starting and closing it after it's off. One mistake and you'll need a new impeller (tough job) or will jam salt water up into the genset while planing if the genset is off. Many make this mistake and learn from it.
6. Prior to shutting the genset down, turn off all AC items to allow the coils to cool. Do this for 3-5 minutes before every shut down.
7. Think also about changing your Racor Fuel filter. If it is clogged, this could be why the genset is shutting down. Worth a check... The Racor Filter I used to replace mine is PN "R11T".
8. Lastly, I have learned not to "stress" my genset by only running ONE major AC appliance at a time. For example, if I have the hot water heater on and I want to use the microwave, I turn off the water heater on the AC panel for the few minutes I operate the microwave. Then, I turn the water heater back on. I basically watch the Amps on the AC panel and try to keep it at or below 25 amps. Your boat's AC wiring is rated to 30 amps so why stress it and run the risk of a fire or blown fuses and circuit breakers? Very easy to turn things on and off so as to make life easy on the genset. I call this "managing the load" on the genset. For me the major items include the following which operate ONE at a time: Water Heater, Microwave, Stove, portable electric heater, hair dryer, and the boat's reverse cycle Air Conditioner.

I'm going to go down there next week and do some "summerizing" and I'll keep your tips and suggestions in mind.

I may certainly be overloading it. I'm coming from the 7kw Wesrerbeke on a larger craft, and that Genny would get grumpy unless you really loaded it up. Angler Management is a busy boat, and I can see where background water heater and maybe making water then the crew starts charging their phones and the fridge trips on...

I do have spare fuses and relays. And diesel oil.

Thanks guys. I really am a decent boater despite my obviously silly questions. Bought the boat in May and ran it all summer killing salmon, did the big mains maintenance and just now getting into the nuts and bolts of all the systems.

I agree- I called FP last season, they were very helpful. Mine was shutting down, was low on coolant. They walked me through checking overflow bottle, how to bleed air out of genset when I refilled coolant.
Great service.

x3. Fischer are good to deal with. I was blowing fuses when starting. It could have been the K1 relay or the starter (solenoid is part of it).
I changed my starter last year. They were helpful with troubleshooting. I tried the inexpensive relay first and then the starter fixed it.
The starter has different size bolts, so be very careful when you take them out. You want to put the shorter bolt in the right hole or you will have even bigger issues.

Thanks guys, feeling way more comfortable in this area.

My model is labeled "FP Mini 4+" which I have learned is a 4200 series and uses the 4200 series owners manual which is downloadable. I changed the oil last night as a test with no issues, runs great now, tightened some screws on a loose bracket that holds the starting fuses/relays.

I had a mechanic change the oil and do the full service last spring, including impeller. FP says these impellers are very flexible as to be self priming, etc... yet the downside is they tend to wear out more quickly. I'm not sure I need to change the impeller this spring again after only running the genny 20 hours, but I should carry a spare for the longer trips north.

While I'm waiting a return phone call/e-mail, anyone know what the part number for this model is and where to find it? My mechanic said he found it on ebay...?

I would buy the part directly from FP but that's me. Glad you're more comfortable with it and remember to let the coils cool with no load for 3-5 minutes before you shut it down. It's a great little machine!

OK ended up buying a spare impeller and "kit" and an oil cap... cap part #PR509.0184

Ordered online and then called. My advice would be just call.
