Freeze plate retrofit on 330?

Has anyone on here sucessfully done this? I have a 2004 model. Recently got a look at a 2006 ( I believe ) that had the factory installed option, but was done as a "retrofit" before they retooled to make the plates concealed.

Have not done it and would question doing it unless you absolutely needed it. Seems like a lot of work....
