Galvanic Corrosion

Has anyone ever had any issues with galvanic corrosion? I had a tilt issue some time ago and had to leave the motors in the water for about 2-3 weeks. When I finally got the prop out of the water I had two quarter sized holes eaten out of it. I contacted the prop repair shop and he said that certainly should not have happened and suspects galvanic corrosion. My boat has been on shore power and I believe is equipped with a galvanic isolator. Could it be a short in the shore power cord? Where/how should I begin looking for the problem?

Something is definitely wrong. It could be on your side (possibly as simple as bad/wrong anodes or anodes painted over/not making good contact), it could be a neighbor, it could be the marina. Have a mechanic perform an in-water anode reference test. Mercury (and I'm sure others) makes a test kit/probe and most marina's should have this tool. That will tell you if your current level of protection is adequate.

I second the idea of testing your boat for stray current. Also look to other boats near you, older run down boats, perhaps commercial boats with deferred maintenance issues.

Make the port aware of the issue, they could be making a hot slip with their wiring.

Be aware of where this item clips.

"Clip to bolt on outdrive
Clip to grounding strap if possible or wire items together with copper wire and clip to wire
Do not connect to negative battery terminals".
