What wire would you use to make a long run for a NMEA 0182 connection? Garmin has a 6' cable but that won't be enough to go from the dash, up the post of my top, across the underside of the top and into my radio box.
Don't know if this means anything to you but here is the spec:fellinger said:What wire would you use to make a long run for a NMEA 0182 connection? Garmin has a 6' cable but that won't be enough to go from the dash, up the post of my top, across the underside of the top and into my radio box.
That's a power cable not intended for signal applications. The spec calls for a much smaller gauge wire( there is virtually no power draw) but more importantly, twisted pair and a shield. The twisted pair arrangement is critical to reduce electrical 'noise' in the data streamParthery said:Ancor makes a "fourplex"marine wire...typically used on boat trailers. I think it's 16 gauge which is a little heavier but will work fine. West sells it....

Thanks for the good information. Now I need to find this stuff. I was originally thinking of using phone line. That stuff is really small gauge.
Thoughts on where to get the wire you mention?
