Well yesterday coming into the dock like I have done many times before, I hit pretty hard. Now I have this gash in the fiberglass I need to repair. I know I can use a marine epoxy and sand smooth but how do you come close to matching the color?

Hey Cap’n Tom-
For what it’s worth… see following thread, esp around post #4.
I’m no expert, but I was pleased with my color match results with only a little trial and error.
Good luck… JJ

I have used spectrum with good results in the past, the one bellow is for 95-04 year models, they have them for all models from 83 onwards.
As long as the F/G is not damaged it will suit .
Thanks, after doing a little research this looks like the route to go. A little pricey for only needing a small amount but I want it done right. The old saying is only go as fast as you want to hit something, but a low tide with most of the dock out of the water plus strong crosswinds got me.

Dealers carry gelcoat repair bottles if needed.

That may not be just an epoxy fix. It depends on the depth and width of the damage. Anything wide than about 1/4 inch should be patched and not just filled. Since the glass fibers are exposed, the repair would normally include grinding a much wider area ( the general rule is 5-10 times the depth), multiple layers of smaller width fiberglass cloth, sanding, fairing and then color matched gelcoat ( and sanding, polishing and buffing.)

Called the dealer Marine Max and they don't carry it. They have to order it from Grady and it is around 90.00. I ordered this gelcoat repair kit off Amazon instead, hope it works. BTW this damage is much smaller than it appears mainly a chip and a scrape so no glass work is required. https://www.amazon.com/Boat-Repair-Kit-Grady-White-white/dp/B08L1XG7X7

Am I seeing the core or a hollow space on the right side of the gash?

No it is just a scrape in the gelcoat. Believe me I have repaired worse with Marine Tex.

Got it. It looked more serious at first glance.
FYI, Marinetex is tintable if you can find the tints.

OK, got the kit yesterday and did the repair today. It turned out pretty good. Not perfect but I'd figured I'd better leave well enough alone, I'm probably the only one who will ever notice. I would definitely recommend this kit just for the closeness in color, that was my biggest concern.
