A Apple Airtag is a good device for many things but not the best for theft as it relies on other Apple devices to get and send position. As long other apple devices are around that works surprisingly well and i have and use them for my keychain and luggage and they work as supposed.
However for tracking a vehicle a GPS tracker is best and at least here will reduce car insurance, but more expensive and bulky. Problem with G3/4/5 trackers is that the cell phone signal can be easily jammed what make them jammed useless for tracking purposes and they do not work more than approx 6 nm off shore, depending on cell phone signal, same as a Airtag neither.
Not sure if Airtags can be jammed, but their presence can be detected what a thief may let search for them and throw them away.
The best would be probably the combination of a GPS Tracker and one/several Airtags.
  • My tracker alarms me if:
  • vibrations happen
  • boat leaves marina
  • speed limit
  • low battery
The most important of the above is to know that boat left the marina without me, vibration gives me too often false alarms due wave movement in marina so i switched it off.

If I have a new boat, I guess I would spring for it. I carry enough insurance so if the worst happens, it happens. Then I have a solid reason to look for a new one.

Apple Air Tag?
Thieves are smarter than that. Air Tags require any apple phone to be nearby to communicate its position. They'll make sure that no one on their crew has an iPhone and they'll make sure that wherever they take it there is no one around with an apple device that can communicate where the air tag is located. Once they get it away to their "safe location" the air tag will reveal itself by beeping periodically as a feature of the anti-stalking designed in so they'll locate it and toss it.

A friend of mine lost 3 dirt bikes from his garage a while back - all with Air Tags - and never got a single ping on a location. He was told by the investigating officers that the criminals are on to the Air Tag and other locating devices.

First thing to do with an Air Tag that you are hiding is to pop the cover off, and remove the speaker. It is a little disc in the center, that will fall right out. You Tube video.
Anti-stalking feature will send a text to any Iphone nearby after a certain period of time or distance traveled. Boat thieves are very quick, they may hook up and go before an AT sends them an alert, or the distance from the back of your boat to the cab of a truck may be too great. There must be a lot of AT's on planes and trains, but how many alerts do you get?

Apple AirTags have several anti-stalking features, including:

  • Alerts: Your iPhone will send you an alert if it detects an unknown AirTag tracking you.

  • Precision finding: You can use your iPhone to find the location of an unknown AirTag.

  • Directional arrow: If your iPhone has a U1 chip, an arrow will point you to the AirTag's location.

  • Audio alerts: The AirTag will make a sound to help you find it.

  • Disable tracker: You can disable the tracker immediately if you detect it.

  • Industry specification: This ensures that Bluetooth location-tracking devices are compatible with unauthorized tracking detection and alerts.

  • Find My app: The Find My app alerts iPhone users to any unknown Google tracking devices as well as AirTags.

  • Collaboration with Google: Apple and Google are working together to create a universal system that addresses unwanted tracking across both iOS and Android platforms.
You can also manually scan for trackers using your smartphone. To do this, you can:
  1. Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check
  2. Tap Manage Sharing & Access
  3. Tap Items > Stop Sharing
