Hi, I think the 258 is a great choice with either motor setup. I have the f250. For me the only time I really only think of twins is pulling into my slip with a crosswind blowing. Again, for me its just a matter of one more leg of a "K turn"...and that gets easier the more I do it. I also really like that the motor completely clears the water when tilted up. I'm not sure if that would be the case with 4s twins and a kicker.........Tom

Twins, twins, twins. A 9.9 hp kicker isn;t going to do anything for you 50 miles out to sea, or anywhere really. having the knowledge that you have a strong backup means tons. Only issue with both going would be fuel or dead batteries, but that would kill a single 250 too. I love having both mine behind me. of course, I don;t like doing twice the maintenance (read that as paying for twice as any thermostats, water pumps, plugs, fule filters, etc). But, the piece of mind is huge.

I don't know if Michigan fishing is like Erie, but 50 miles out is Canadian water! The security of twins is not as important as it is for you off-shore east coast guys that travel great distances. A tow is usually never more than a few miles away.
To each their own.
