Grady White 258 Journey

Hey guys. I’ve been a longtime Grady White owner. I’ve owned a tournament and currently an 05 Seafarer. I’m looking at buying a 258 Journey in the next year or so. I live in NJ but would be willing to travel. I’d like to hear back from anyone considering selling in the near future. I’d prefer the twin 150s but am open to anything. Let me know if you guys have anything available. I’m highly interested

You're a long time owner of several GW boats at the old age of 22? If I'm reading that right, there is hope for the future!
I owned the predecessor to the 258. I will say the one you have posted looks bare bones, but there is a lot to love about a functional, easy to own boat. My 248 was similar. Sometimes I wonder if the move to the 270 was worth the headache.

I’ve owned this 226 Seafarer for 4 years now but my dad owned the tournament since 89 previously lol. I’m a big fan of the journey but it’s rare to find any for sale. I’m hoping to buy in the late fall or winter but we’ll see…

We owned a 258 Journey for ten years. The first five she was powered with the 3.4L Yamaha F250, which I was happy with. Then we put on the 4.2L F300 when it came out. That was the perfect engine for the 258 - if you're okay with a single engine, as I was for this boat.

The F300 made a significant difference in being able to stay on the back of a following sea when coming in a hairy inlet those few times I stayed out longer than I should have. It also allowed the boat to plane out at a lower RPM and reduced our fuel consumption on long boat trips.

Overall, we really liked the boat. We did most of the Great Loop in that boat and made several runs to the Bahamas.

Where the boat did not shine is in a closely-spaced, fairly steep, wind-driven two-foot or so chop. The hull just does not like to 'catch air' much behind the fairly sharp V first quarter of the hull length, in my opinion. For me, if I couldn't change course to take the waves at a more favorable angle, I just had to put the trim tabs way down to make sure the sharp V maintained contact with the water most of the time. Sucked up more gas, but my back was happier :) .

Unfortunately, not too many of them around. But good luck with your search. And when you find one, use a professional surveyor. Not just for a Grady, but for any boat. That relatively small amount can save you much more in dollars and headaches.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like it rides exactly like my 226 Seafarer which is what I would expect. I’d prefer twins for the reliability of taking offshore but I’m definitely open to the single 300. Hardest part is finding one to buy but I’m willing to wait till a quality one shows up on the market. I was just curious if anyone is considering selling within the next year or so…

Yes, the Voyager was sold with twin 115's or 150's.
A Voyager with twin 150 hpdi's has to run like a scalded dog!

I have seen 51 one time with a set of 14.25 props 30 gallons of fuel, no gear and me much lighter with a strong tide. She’s a solid 45mph boat. I can cruise light 2mpg at 37 if it’s flat

Awesome. I like that boat just a little older than I’m hoping for. Ashame they didn’t continue it as long as the journey. I guess I’ll just wait till a 258 comes along. Might be awhile lol

The 248 voyager is the 258 journey. Just running surface to transom and different rear seat. They discontinued in like 03 and 04 was the first model year for the journey. Good luck with your search!

We ran much lighter than you with our 248 and could hit 46 lightly loaded with only a 225 ox66. I would think your boat would never struggle to get out of the hole regardless of weight.

We ran much lighter than you with our 248 and could hit 46 lightly loaded with only a 225 ox66. I would think your boat would never struggle to get out of the hole regardless of weight.
Never did
even 5 full-size guys. 3 flats of bait. 400lbs if ice 20gallons of fuel. Food 18 rods, etc. was a bit slower but that’s expected. She was heavy. Didn’t struggle to get on plane at all
