Gulfstream 23 - etec g2 300

I finally got a day to get out on the water after the re-power of my 1996 Gulfstream with a G2 300 (replacing the original carbureted Yamaha 250). I thought I'd share my numbers in case anyone is interested.
I did an 86 mile loop and burned 33 gallons for an average of 2.6. I could just barely get 1 mpg with the old motor.
The extra 50 hp makes a huge difference - it totally transforms the boat.

WOT 5400 does 45 mph at 24.5 gph - and there's room for improvement since the motor is way too low on the bracket. She's propped with an 18 pitch four-blade.
Flat water conditions with the curtains up:
RPM MPH GPH
5000 41 18.3
4500 36 14.2
4000 30 11.0
3500 23 8.6

Wow! Thanks for posting the numbers...that truly helps those of us who are considering re-powering. What kind of warranty did you get with that 300?

I was able to grab the promotion underway during the boat show in Boston: 7 year warranty (engine and controls), free rigging including the 4.3" LCD display, and a stainless steel prop included.

Nice I have same boat with F250. I also need to raise the engine. I suspect 300hp is about perfect.

Twin 150's would be better yet!

Or even twin 200's!
Those are great numbers... blows my twin ox66's away.

cant put twins on current bracket and I prefer maintaining 1 rather than two....

Thanks. I don't know if I could ever go back to 2 stroke, but your performance and fuel burn is impressive.

Thanks for this post. I too have a 232 (2005) with single 250hp Yamaha. Can't get anywhere near the numbers you posted. Sluggish take off to plane and my thoughts of overworking the engine cruising at 4600 - 4800 rpm to get 28 - 30 mph in calm water has me considering re-power. Etec has caught my eye. Did you talk with the Grady White folks about any need for transom modifications ? If so, what was necessary?

I did not consult with Grady on the re-power as the weight of the engine is 569 lbs which is less than the 3.3 liter F250. Everything bolted right up. The only modification was that the holes in the transom for the steering hoses were plugged since everything (fuel, battery cables, controls and steering hoses) runs through the rigging tube.

In response to generalee: I'm thoroughly pleased with the re-power, but I replaced a 20 year old carbureted smokey beast of an engine. Before you drop all that coin to replace an F250, which is a terrific engine, make sure you're propped correctly. See:

Thanks artodea for the prop thread reference. I will certainly investigate the option of a prop change before even seriously considering spending so much on re-power.
Another compliment on your re-power: The color choice on the new engine sure fits the Gulfstream color / striping nicely.

I saw you guys out last night, I was in a friends Parker. She looks nice with the set up !
As far as over working the engine, the Parker I was in has about 1400 hours on the F225. He runs it at 4800 all day long.
