Hey all. For decades I’ve always loved the idea of the Gulfstream because of the beam, but never actually been on one on the water. Only sitting on a rack at the dealer a long, long time ago. The cabin layout is very non-standard compared to every other sub-33’ walkaround or express style boat, but remains unchanged for what, 35+ years? How do you owners feel about the functionality of the cabin for kids day trip naps and occasional 2 person overnight compared to the traditional full width v-berth of say a Journey or Sailfish layout?

The long version: I was a kid in the 90s and remember frequenting the Grady dealer when my dad was upgrading our family boat from the 1980s 20 Overnighter we had. Looked at Gulfstream, Journey, Sailfish, and Marlin way back then. He wanted a Sailfish but was never able to come to terms with the dealer on price, so we ended up with a Mako 293. Now in my 30s and have had a plethora of boats of my own, of those some cabin models including a Pursuit 2350, Albemarle 24, SeaCraft 23, and Shamrock 20. But I still have the soft spot for the Gulfstream. My wife and I overnighted on the 2350 a few times pre-kids. It was plenty for the 2 of us and a dog in the floor at the end of the bunk. Our top hatch and cabin door cracked had great air flow. I also remember the mid-berth of the 293 being useless due to no air flow under there without AC on the boat. And in 10 years of that boat can’t recall anyone ever once using the head. We now have 2 young kids of our own. I want to be able to overnight again in the future, but don’t want to own and tow a boat as big as a Marlin to sleep 2 adults and 2 kids. Idealistic me is thinking it would be feasible on a gulfstream given the beam and cockpit area to do kids in the cabin, wife and I on the deck with a mosquito net tent and extended shade off the top. What do you think, doable or 2 adults and 2 kids only doable on a Sailfish or larger?

We had a 272 Sailfish and sold it during the pandemic, too early in it too, prices kept going up after I sold! We were boatels and wanted something as a "stop-gap" knowing we were going to look for a 30' Grady in a year or two. The Gulfstream was on our short list until we were on one in the dealers yard and it was sitting next to an Islander. The Islander we felt was a lot more functional in the layout and a lot more HD looking when next to each other. We ended up finding a 268 Islander and were happy for a season or two until we found the 305 Express we have now.

We bought a real nice 10k GVRW tandem trailer and it towed like a dream. If you are in the market for a Grady with a good cabin for the kids and want to say "trailerable" I thought the Islander had it hands down over the Gulfstream, the bathroom with easier access in the Islander is key with the kids. I like the Gulfstream a lot, but I felt the cabin was not all that different then a Seafarer. We have a 5 year old and my nieces and nephews will come out to the beach with us. I had the illusion they would nap in the cabin of our boat now but they never do. My daughter loves playing down there, but she has yet to take a nap in the comforts of the AC when she could be swimming instead!

Curious if you had twins or a single on you Islander? Seems like a lot of boat for a single but see tons out there with a single 250

My wife and I overnight in our Gulfstream ocassionally, usually at a slip. The bunk arrangement works but not optimal for more than a couple days from my experience. It is definitely cozy. With that said, it is awesome overall, good space for storage, comfortable to sit to get out of the sun or for a nap. Mine has a porta-potty and I know the newer models have a plumbed head (or at least as an option). The large cockpit and beam is great for fishing, swimming, enjoying water fun. And it will go up and run with the twin 200's (up to 50mph WOT).

The new 232 Gulfstream's, and I believe the older ones as well, do have the bunkbed style of cabin, but they also should come with the cushions to fill the cabin where you'd normally be walking. So, you could in theory sleep one or two smaller people on the bottom portion and then likely another smaller person on the bunkbed. I admittedly know very little about the 232 Gulfstream other than the basics, though I did step on one before purchasing my 228 Seafarer and realized it's a bigger boat than I needed. I like the smaller sized 228 Seafarer considerably better with its all level floor, single main motor, non bunkbed style cabin and it's considerably easier to tow with an 8' beam as opposed to the 232 Gulfstream that has a 9'3" beam. Definitely a great boat that is still produced to this day, but something that was considerably bigger than I needed for my intended fishing/boating purposes. I imagine that two grownups, especially larger sized grownups, and two kids trying to sleep in the cabin of a 232 Gulfstream would be more than just a bit uncomfortable, maybe even bordering on comical?

Had twin 150 HPDI's. I felt the power was perfect for the boat.

More is always better, but I was not disappointed for our use. It was a few years ago but I think I was running high 20's MPH at cruise. In perspective I thought it was similar to my 272 Sailfish with 225 OX66's, and the 305 Express I have now has 250's and I cruise 28-30mph. I would love 300's but the 250's do the job.

Intent is not to sleep all in the cabin haha. That would be comical. That ain't happening in less than a Marlin. Either 2 adults while kids are at the grandparents. 1 adult and 1 kid on boys trip. Or 2 kids in cabin, 2 adults on deck under extended shelter over the cockpit

Comfortable for maybe 3, Two adults and a 10-12 year old. On my boat the kids and wife sleep in the cabin, 3 across, wife and the baby’s, older son on the bunk(with the optional cushion inserts). I typically sleep outside on an air mattress. (Queen fills up the whole cockpit area)
