Has anyone installed a 12" Garmin - GPSMAP 1242xsv in a 228?

You made the right decision going with the 8610xsv's. It's a better unit if it's within your budget. I chose them for my boat.

Interesting thing is the Garmin chartplotter series of displays have nearly identical screen resolution. There is not much difference between the 943xsv and the 1243xsv.

The jump to the 86xx series is significant. This unit has 150% more pixels than the 943/1243. Makes a big difference on charts, no so much on radar or sounder. The 8612 actual has less pixels (lines).
