Okay, am I wrong to be angry on this? I get the boat back. My friends were back at the docks. I had to wait for almost two hours while they tied up, gathered their things and went to clean their 8 red snapper they caught illegally outside 9nm.

Then one sits there and talks trash, and as I am fighting trying to learn how to run twinengines and dock backing in around incoming boats, all trying to tell me how to do it “are you using one engine?” Etc...and the current, and now the know it all who fishes illegally is trying to pass on his wisdom...all the while the other is bragging to people watching how they caught their limit....while I was busy fixing the boat and spending another 800 bucks, and now, too damn late and hot to take MY kids out to the jetties due to the wind and waves and the fact I do NOT want to have to deal with parking this damn boat again.

Sorry, the boat works....but a hell of a time, coming back to hundreds of boats trying to load while I am trying to back in next to them and listen to all of them tell me how to do it, which is ironic because listening to them is what is throwing me off because I cannot listen and look around at the same time.

Just infuriating.

We are do ked, tied up, but too irritated to talk to them atm. Two nights in a row, our slip had someone else’s boat in it, and when I asked for the one next to us, they say, “It’s reserved...” well, duh...

heh

I think I will catch a nice morning run and then cancel the next two days, take the kids fishing in the morning and then load up and go home.

I think I’ll invite someone next weekend that can and will fish legally and help vs fish.

I’ll upload photos etc in the morning. I have not had a chance to take any yet.

It's a new muscle you will learn to tune people out and do your own thing.
Most experienced boaters understand and will give you space, it seems like the one's that try and give advice aren't the ones that are driving the boat they go out on. It's an ego thing for sure.

Tomorrow will be better. Enjoy the time with your kids. Make the memories that will matter and you will forget this noise soon enough.

Thanks guys, again...sorry. I am not mad about the boat, I am mad I did not get to take the kids fishibg, so the illegal red snapper stories rubbed me wrong heh.

Tomorrow is a new day and will see how it goes. Till then, took the kids and got them some ice cream and something at the gift shop.

Well, took it for a short ride and on the way back, both engines continued to give alarms. Just going to head home tomorrow.

At what RPM did the alarm sound?

Mine did the same after getting the impeller, thermostats, etc done in the off-season. However, seems to only happen when we are idling in gear, but goes away the moment I adjust the trim and/ or increase the throttle slightly. Hasn’t happened since the first 2-3 trips.

sorry to hear about your challenges...Hope you get back on the water soon!

Were the engines peeing when the alarms were on? Keep your phone, or camera handy. Whenever you get an alarm, take a picture of your Yamaha gauges, so that you will know what they read, and what lights were on at the time.

Headed home. No sense staying. The other guy would have just gone out and fished for snapper illegally and I was not going to teach my kids to do that, and I did not feel like sleeping on the boat all day.

I think I will take my son and brave thursday and friday andfish the jetties or something.

I'm in no way trying to make you mad here, but your whole weekend plan was doomed from the start. Sorry you have to cut it short.

First off, you don't try and learn a new boat during a weekend at a busy ramp, especially after a two month quarantine from the virus, everybody and their brother will be there trying to get on the water. Most of them really have no business owning a boat much less trying to tell you how to run yours. Best for you to have taken off work and gone on a Tuesday or Wednesday as those seem to be the less busy days.

Secondly, your laundry list of people that you took or met you there for your first initial splash/shakedown/christening, was to many to deal with and really unfair to yourself, putting undue pressure on you to get them on the water, when you, yourself, is clueless about your new boat. Again, you should have gone on a early week day with one person, a guy preferably, that can help you with launch and load and with no expectations of fishing, you are there to learn your boat. You and your buddy go to the lake, practice unload and loading, backing up with two motors, maneuvering with two motors. If there is a marina on the lake, pull in and practice docking in an empty slip, practice, practice, practice, and then practice some more. As far as the asshats at the ramp trying to tell you how to do it, you need to learn to ignore the peanut gallery. The quiet guy that wades into the water and grabs your bow to help you on the trailer is the guy that you need to get to know, not the ones running their mouth, even if he's your friend.

Thirdly,, as you have now found out, after service of your motors, always test run and put into gear, forward and reverse, to make sure everything is lined up and functioning properly. You had already changed your impellers and they were peeing I'm guessing, if you had put both motors in gear on the muffs or in the tank, you would have known that one of them needed attention. Instead, you dropped another unplanned $800 on a full service, last minute, on an emergency visit. I thought you had already changed the oil and filter, plugs and other items during this past 14 months. Why pay to do it again with no time on the motors? All that was needed was to drop the lower unit, see what wasn't lined up and put back together. One maybe two hours at most for labor rate, no parts needed and away you go.

Fourth,,, your other supposed friend with a boat. As a responsible captain, he shouldn't have allowed your other "friends" to keep the illegal fish. Take them out fishing to enjoy the day and throw back the illegal ones. If that's the way he is all the time, I would suggest you talk to him about it or find another friend. If DNR gets wind of it or does a spot check on him and catches him, they will always be on the lookout for him, if you're anywhere around him at the time, you'll be guilty by association.

You seem to be a nice guy with your pay it forward attitude on your extra parts and such. We have all been with you on your 14 month journey to get your boat wet. With the addition of the hardtop and the cleaning you've done on your new to you Grady, don't give up!!! You've got a really nice boat now. Step back, take a deep breath, relax and make a new plan,,,without 2 dozen people involved. I, and most here, understand the excitement to get our new to us boats on the water, but there is a process that needs to be followed or frustration will hit with multiple failed attempts and you'll want to give up.

My boat is therapy for me, I enjoy my time on the water away from everyday life, even if just for a moment. You need to start over, go to the lake, spend time getting to know your boat, heck, rent a slip at the lake and go down by yourself and work with your boat, you don't need an audience. You can make friends there too. As you have seen from your exposure to the masses at Port A,, saltwater does not make you a captain! Practice makes you a captain, and a real captain is always learning and willing to quietly help a fellow boat owner. I've had many styles of boats over the years and they all have quirks that you learn to recognize. Even now, I still learn from mistakes, especially in the current or tides, or a gust of wind, right when you have the perfect line on the trailer and you miss the guide bunks and load off to the side and chip your keel on the trailer,,,,, it happens.

Sorry for the long post, just trying to get you to see a few issues you had going into this weekend. We offer you advice on here as a help to you as most of us have already gone through it, not to make you mad and go against your plan. How you receive this is up to you.

Ky out!

Well written! This note applies to all of us, some have done, and are doing the walk, others with new boats and new experiences can use this to make their expectations positive. Nothing is more pleasing than a positive day on the water in a boat you have made yours through hard work and new experiences. My 208 along with others, have taken me to many "centres of this universe" and back for years. Since I am retired, my hope is, I can chase the fish, enjoy a sunset on the water, cruise the many Islands here, until I can't stand up....... because without it I would not have the happiness and fun in owning and working on my "yacht" I believe it becomes a lifestyle, once you get the boating very healthy virus you are hooked for life......but what a way to go!

First off, the only reason the trip was doomed, is because I had people with me that expected to fish. For me, had I been alone, it would not have been doomed.

Port A is always busy....nature of the beast. No way to ever get it out there on a slow day with weather like that.

To that end, I will reserve my comments for a new post.

Btw - we agree on most your points. Had it not been for the discussion I had with my long time friend, he would not be welcome back on my boat. I don’t ever put me, or my boat, in the position of doing anything illegal....well, on purpose lol.

I think all will be more clear in the nee post.

KY summed it up perfect. I feel sorry for you , you have a lot of bad luck. It would kill me buying a boat and not using it for 14 months. I put mine in the water ( on the river) the day I picked her up for testing and fishing the following week after changing the fuel filters, spark plugs, filling the tank and installing a second VHF. Took my EPIRB from my old boat, you can't go offshore here without EPIRB
Personally when I take my boat out, all I need is another person that can reverse the trailer, do it quick and do it well . I handle all the rest. I will take anyone with me as long as I have one that can do that and feel confident they will .
Docking with 2 engines is way easier than one, of course some practice is required.
I always plan for the worse and hope for the best .

I do not believe in luck. Life happens. I plan for the worst, does not mean I cannot be mad when it happens, heh.

is what it is. I toyed with the ideaof just selling the boat, cutting my losses...buying something else, maybe even another Grady.

This boat is the quintessential culmination of every other boat I have had and/or wanted. The only thing that would be better is if it was a 330 express, heh. But it is/was what I could afford and tow. If I got rid of it, and yes, I could probably easily sell it for say, 55k, I would still be stuck with the same problem, “I want to take ALL of my family fishing....and not just a couple times a year.”

Last month, I spent, call it ...right under $4,000 on this boat, all told. For that price, I could fish charters, but truth be told, I cannot afford that more than once a year or every other year....not in a month, not in two. I can afford to take myself each month, once...but not anyone else....and who the heck wants that? The boat, if running, would be so I can enjoy what I love...and the people I love as well.

Now, I am a state employee, that is a fluke....cannot afford that again, not and stay married, but....I had a goal of taking my son fishing. When we failed and failed and failed (let me count the tries...ok, got it right....lol), the entire family wanted to go. So, had it been only me, this trip would have been annoying, but expected. The problems were not related to what I did or did not expect, it was related to what the people that went with me did or did not expect and my inability to separate those.

so, bad luck? Eh, maybe....but I like to think of it, now that I am home and comfortable, as “expected output”.

look, this boat sat for over a year. The water pumps were installed badly by me, once again trying to rush to get this working after taking people out and breaking down. The bilge pumps were due to bad wiring from whomever wired them last. The rest was expected.....annoying, but expected. Now, all I need to do is hook up the laptop to the engines and hope they tell me what upset them. I have a feeling it will be the fuel system, and have already purchased two separator systems because they look that bad.

like I said, not inexperience here, just trying to take people with me to help trailer and launch the boat and getting caught between testing and trying to be a good host. Hell, the one time I was able to take her to the intercoastal, we had to tirn back because my friend’s daughters showed up at the slip and one was afraid of the water and no-one said anything till we got out there. So, short trip....and the engines started beeping alarms about 100ft from returning to the slip, so eh...it worked out as we were planning to fish the next day and that saved us money and a headache.

Again, may just be fuel, we will see, but all fixable.

I have contemplated 10 ways from Sunday. No way i could sell this boat and guarantee it would not happen again for any less. I also would not find a community of owners, like here, to just talk to. I am not just fixing “my boat” I am dragging along all you poor suckers as well lol. So, we are all in this, whatever comes...so strap in, grab a drink...three...and expect a long and bumpy ride. We will get there when we get there. People may argue, give advice, get mad when it is not heeded, lol...but I am driving and you all get a window seat to the fun, and potty breaks...lol.

I just will not be inviting anyone on the next trip and hopefully can get assistance trailering her or do it really early so I can do it myself.

KY said exactly what I was thinking last week, too many things on your plate, and trying to please too many people on what should have been a bare bones shakedown cruise. Take one person with some experience, and leave the alcohol and the fishing rods at home. Start at the lake.
