We just had a nice storm come thru here on eastern LI and my 24' Grady started moving. The 300llb mooring i set myself with 24' of 1/2in chain wouldnt hold her. 5 1/2 feet of water at high tide! Anyways has anyone used a helix mooring (http://store.hamiltonmarine.com/brow...-/4,36140.html) with success? I'm going to try this or the square stock one with 2 rings or screws (http://helixmooring.com/). The first i can screw in myself with a bar coz its so low at low tide.

btw the bottom is heavy mud at the top http://i1083.photobucket.com/albums/...psbe7a1083.jpg

North Shore or South Shore? It has been my experience on the North Shore that the mushroom is the only way to go. I would bet it was just not set properly or had loosened. How far did it move?

I'm on Shelter Island between the twin forks--i set it myself dragging it out by hand and when i positioned it -she laid down half sunk in the mud. I put it in months ago and had my 20ft Grady on her. She seemed to be moving towards the rocks a good 6 feet or more before i had enough and with help got the boat outta there!
I'm thinking the single screw helix backed up by that mushroom would do the trick. At least that i could set myself on a good tide while the other helix would have to be set professionally.

Costello Marine gave me prices on a few options-here they are
1)For $2600.00 he will jet down to the eye a 500llb mushroom that he supplies (straight down buried)
2)For $3500.00 to $4k he will set that square stock 1 1/2" helix mooring in 5 ft of water
3)For $600.00 he will jet down to the eye my existing 300llb mushroom
or i could (by hand) screw in the round stock 1 1/4 single screw helix and cross my fingers

Moorings suck--i need dock space ha

we have a cottage on Cape Cod bay in N. Truro. We installed a helix mooring in the sand in front of the cottage 2 years ago. On a moon low tide, we used a turning bar to drill it into the sand, i think about 5 feet. We had about 1.5 feet of water at that time. We have no other moorings close to us so we could put 40' of 1/2 inch chain to the ball, giving lots of scope even at high tide when the water is 14 feet deep or so.

I moor my 282 Sailfish there and we regularly have SW winds that blow 20knots driving 3-5 foot waves in the summer. Also NW will do the same.

I have had no problems with the mooring.
