Is there a way to prime the new filter by cranking the engine? Prime it by pouring fresh fuel into it? Prime it by squeezing the bulb for a few hours?

ALSO, the head that the filter mounts into has some paint coming off it. Is this a problem as long as the contents of the old filter are still pristine? That is, no water or no garbage. Thank you gents, glad you made it through this lousiest of winters. J

You can pour some fresh gas into new one it will save you some pumping of bulb otherwise just pump it slowly and you'll hear it filling up. The paint on filter mount is cosmetic and not much you can do cause of the dampness and saltwater air. I switched mine over to the stainless ones and they look very good and hold up much better.

When you empty the old filter, pour the gas into a large clear container. This will allow you to see what kind of gunk the filter caught and (hopefully no) if there is any water. This will all sink to the bottom of the container and you can carefully refill the new filter with clean old fuel. Spin it back on and you will be good to go.

Dispose of old fuel and gunk in a correct manner!

I fire the motor up on the hose first....let it run for a bit, then shut it off and change the filter. After the filter is changed, I prime the bulb and fire it back up and let it idle for a few minutes...this ensures that the canister is full and the air is out.

Agree - dump your fuel in a mason jar and let it set....you might be surprised what you find.

Note that if you have a VST tank as the SSII motors have,and drain it for storage or maintenance, it is a good ideato pre-fill it using the primer since running it dry can cause problems.

In eight years of owning the Grady (and Yamaha SS II Series Engine, I have never drained the fuel system over the winter. Been using E-free gas with Pri-G Stabilizer, and then go down and start her up once during the winter. Have had zero fuel problems, so far anyway.

Can't get non E10 here. I do not use stabilizer during the boating season but do use Ring Free for the carbon. Prior to winter layup, I add d Stabil that would be used everyday, take the boat for a ride and then drain the VST tank and the motor mounted fuel filter. I leave the water separator alone. I fog the motor by spraying the fogging oil into each spark plug hole and manually rotating the flywheel.
I also do not fill the fuel tank, It usually has 20 to 25 gallons of gas in it. Motor is 15 years old and so far ( cross my fingers) starts every spring (including this one:)).
