You can't win a million dollars if you are not in all the Calcutta's! Both 2nd place boats lost out on hundreds of thousands.
It's the Super Bowl. Completely unlimited. Multi-million dollar boats, full-time paid crews, crews flown in from Cost Rica, boats from as far away as Texas. White Marlin Open was a $9,000,000 purse and the MidAtlantic was $5,900,000. Michael Jordan's 80' "Catch 23" fished both. Double Barrel 92' Viking fished both. Crazy Salts - a Cape May boat 80' Viking. Take a look at the list below. These are some of the best boats and Captain's in the world. Money is no object - most have 1/2 million dollar fuel budgets and full time crews. I fish on a 56' custom F&S "Nasty Habit" through the grace of a good friend and a few others who can bankroll the tournaments.

Interesting thing is a white marlin typically makes more money than a blue marlin depending on your Calcutta participation. Same with tuna.

Just about anyone can catch the big white marlin (80 to 90 pounds). The guys that run up the big release counts are rarely the big white marlin. They are somewhat loners and not in with the others. Blue marlin are loners too. Rarley do you get more than one especially if they are big ones. Tuna are different. - they run in size groups. Catch a 250 lb big eye and you are likely to catch another similar size. Or get covered up with several same size fish. The big white is luck, the big blue is eternal vigilance and luck and big tuna are inside information about where they are and run them over until they come up.
