Idle's high

Hi Everyone,

Got my Grady up and running just a couple weeks ago. I noticed after replacing the spark plugs and fuel/water separator that my engine at idle is running between 900 - 1000 rpm's. I have a Yamaha Saltwater Series II 130 two stroke, 2001.

In the past 4 years that I have owned the boat, it has idled around 7-800 rpm. I understand that there is an idle adjustment screw. Is this something I should be worried about?

Make sure you are comparing idle speed in the water to idle speed out of the water. The additional backpressure on the exhaust when in the water does make it run a little slower.

Never thought of that. Thanks! If it is still a tad high...is that a sign of something wrong or just in need of an adjustment? The RPMs are pretty consistent, btw.

I would adjust it and run it. If its too high it will clunk into gear, eventually damage gears...not good.

Harpoon (my favorite beer by the way) im assuming you're telling me to adjust it back to factory specs right...or as close as I can get it? Yamaha says 675-725 rpms.

Definitely don't do ANYTHING until you get it in the water and good 'an warmed up. If you have a big enough barrel, you can stick it in there at home.

Several things to check. The motor is running at cold speed and that might indicate that the engine temp sensor is out of wack. Perhaps the t-stats aren't working and the motor is not warming up.
If you think it is warming up and the temp sensor is working, check the throttle cable and remove it's clevis pin to see if the idle lowers. Sometimes the cable gets out of wack or just goes bad.
There is an idle screw and that can be adjusted if needed. There are other things that can affect the idle also but they are harder to diagnose.
By the way, using an inexpensive IR thermometer on the head(s) with the cowling off is a good way to see if the motor is warming up correctly.
As mentioned, running on a muff may skew the idle a bit but I don't think that is your issue (but I have been known to be wrong and called for it many times:))
