I have a 2017 Grady White Express 330. It has a Lewmar Bow thruster with a Lewmar 589002 joystick controller. When I give power to the system it starts right away and only works in one direction. The buttons on the joystick panel do not do anything. If I push the joystick all the way right it stops, but as soon as I let go the motor starts again. i had my diver check for obstructions and everything looks good below.

Any idea what is going on? Anybody experience a similar problem?

Sounds like an issue with the switch/control head.

The joystick is the Lewmar control that only works the thruster?

In addition it possible being the head or switch or wiring, It could be the relay that switched the heavy current at the thruster. I don't think the thruster motor is bad, just an electrical issue that needs to be diagnosed

When I give power to the system (you mean when you push the power button on the joystick?)
it starts right away (what do you mean? The power light come on? The thruster motor starts running without moving the joystick? The boat moves over to one side?)
and only works in one direction. (So I'll assume the power light came on and moving the joystick in one direction stops the motor and center position or left motor is on moving the boat?)
The buttons on the joystick panel do not do anything.

Simple circuit. The heavy duty relay is a ON - center OFF - ON. The joystick operates the relay to the ON position and reverses the motor polarity on the other side of the relay.

When your joystick is powered up it drives the relay to one side (this is wrong!). When you push joystick to the other side the relay drops into OFF position and the joystick doesn't drive the relay to the other side to reverse the motor (this is wrong).

Turning the joystick ON should activate the joystick but not activate the relay.

Relay seems to be working. I'm going with the joystick!

Has this been working? Any boat work going on when it started?

Thanks Hookup! The boat is new to me. During the PPI everything worked. When the boat arrived it was not working correclty. Maybe the PPI guy missed it, I don't know was not there. There is a Big Red emergency disconnect. As soon as I pull it to give power the thrust operates to one side. Joystick does nothing except to stop the motor if I push it hard rightt. if i push it left nothing happens motor continues to operate and move boat...in one direction.

Disconnect joystick at the helm. Should be a 4-wire connector there. Turn the disconnect on. If it still runs the motor it’s the relay (which I doubt). Probably something internal to joystick. You can pull it out and look for something mechanically wrong with it. Something loose or broken.
