Hello: I'm thinking about buying a 1992 24 Explorer with a 1998 225 hp OX66 Salt water series on a Grady Bracket. Had a look at it the other day, and had it out for sea trial. Both boat and motor seam to be sound. Boat is in the water at this time, will have it pulled to have a look at the hull. Also I will have a leak down test done on lower unit and comp test also. I do belive this is the older sv2 hull ?
Any other advice on boat and motor will be appreciated.

:uhm Fuel tanks and hoses are in the 'suspect' range, as are any thru hulls that haven't been changed for stainless. Transom shouldn't be a problem, but water tight integrity of the bracket may be. Any 'original' equipment should be looked at critically. A 225 OX66 should be adequate power for this model, but it will stall adjacent to most every fuel pump. Be sure to ask about any ethanol' mitigation measures taken, but age of components is probably more likely to be a problem. Might be worth a call to Grady to ask about any items with an unusual number of warranty claims back when, as this was the first year of the SV2 for 24'ers. They probably don't have that data, but gets a conversation started ...

Sorry for the late response. I owned a 1992 Explorer for years. I would suspect the "Grady Drive" is pitted and taking on water, mine did when it was about ten or twelve years old. The new owner ended up replacing the bracket with a new unit when he re-powered. I re-wired mine around 2005, as the original wire was not tinned and I had constant voltage drop issues due to corred wiring, terminals, etc. Fuel tanks and fuel hoses are original and suprisingly, still working fine to this day. Transom, stringers were and still are solid. The current owner has replaced about half of thru-hulls due to failure or poor condition. When I sold the boat there was a soft spot in the rear deck, still that way today.

Mine came with the original 1992 (small block) 225 hp Yamaha outboard. I felt the boat was slightly underpowered (and overpropped) for my needs (offshore fishing). In 1999 I replaced the engine with a 2000 250 Yamaha OX66. New engine gave the boat the power I was hoping for, no more dogging it in heavy seas or when heavily loaded for a canyon run with four fishing buddies. Two years after I sold the boat to a good fried the engine blew and they decided to replace it with a new Yamaha 250 four stroke. Weight was a concern, but they went ahead anyway. The boat sits lower than I would like, but they are happy. Fuel economy was something like 2.0 mpg with the 250 EFI at cruise and now it is about 2.5 mpg, but no more two cycle to add (and smell). Tuna trollling we averaged 1.5mpg, now they get about 3.5mpg. (please note all these numbers are stat. mpg, not nautical or knots)

Great boat in my opinion. Arguably, the best riding 24' or less Grady ever made.

Thx for the feedback. Had the boat pulled the other day for inspection of the hull before leak down test and compression test. Well right off the bat the Grady Drive was taking on water and leaking, also there was a hole on the bottom of drive and a plate pop riveted to the lower bottom back of drive. Also there was no zinc where ground wire is connected to eng ground wire was hanging buy one bolt. So i passed on it. Any idea on how much it would cost to R&R Bracket? I would think some where around 3,800 or if not more.

I remember seeing three brands of brackets; Hermco, Armstrong and Stainless Marine. I just spent about one minute looking at prices and it looks like a Hermco bracket installed is around $3200, not sure about the Armstrong , and the Stainless Marine runs between $1000 to $2000 plus labor.

If I was going to replace the bracket on an Explorer, I would opt for one that will easily handle the added weight of a four stroke (roughly 100 to 150 lbs).
