I need to re-power my 1988 Tournament. It is rated for a 200 hp max, but I cant find rating for minimum hp. I had a Yam 115 and it was great for what I used it for. I could get a great deal on a Yam 70hp 2 stroke any ideas whether this would be ok. The farthest I go out is 2 miles in Delaware Bay and usually I travel less than that so speed is not a concern.

Nowhere near enough power for that boat. Minimum for even decent performance is 140.....It'll run with a 115 but not the way it was intended to. Most people power it with 150 - 200 HP. 70 won't even plane.
I had an 89 tournament with a 150hp Johnson. I cruised at 30mph and had power to spare. 115hp is not enough power for the boat.

The guys are correct 70 hp probably won't plane. my 19 tournament has original johnson 150 hp & yes plenty of power.

Take a look at the Suzuki 140. Should be a great match for your boat; four stroke, quiet, great gas mileage, light weight. I have a new one on my boat, a 1985 204C, and it works great. The Suzuki web site has some performance specs for their motors on different boats. That might help you decide. Good luck.

I have a Suzuki DT 140 2 stroke and it works great on my 85 Tournament 19 It has the 20" shaft which is what is listed for the boat. The boat planes out nice and moves well.
I would think a 25" shaft would work but you would probably have to raise the motor. Not sure about that.
The 2 stroke 140 is lighter than the 4 stroke so my boat sits up nice in the water.
The only negative I see is it is louder than a 4 stroke.
In my opinion, it seems to be a good motor.

I had a 1998 192 and it came with an ocean pro Johnson 150. Repowered it in 04 with Yammaha F150. Put over 500 hours on the yammy without a lick of problems and my fuel economy more than doubled over that 2 stroke carburated 150. My brother had an 1987 192 and it came with an 140 HP Evinrude. Before he sold it he considered repowering with a 175. His comment to me was the 140 was at the bare minimum threshold, then again this was back in 1991 or so. Today's 140 Zukies would likely be fine in the 140 range...
I have the same boat. 1988 Tourney 19. I run a 87 Johnson 175 and it performs well. tops out 43mph @5500, criuse 30mph @ 4000. I agree with everyone else, a 70hp is not enough motor for this boat. A 140hp is probably the least hp it will run properly with.

I just had to ask.... his 175 crapped out and he took his 90hp off his 17ft bowrider so he could use his grady for fishing.
I had never seen such a small eninge on such a big boat. But he got to the fishing grounds. At the speed of smell. Actually looked pretty silly.
but we will do what we must to get the big one ,right. He did stay in the bay, I never saw him outside. that would be a real bad bay for his crew if it got nasty and not very safe. I dont think a 115 would do much beter.
Go with 140-175 at least.

Message for "jersey" who tried to repower his 1988 192 Grady. I was wondering how you made out. Did you buy the 70 HP which was advised as under powered? The reason I want to know is I am re-powering my 1988 192 Grady. I just Purchased a very low hour 115 2002 Johmson for a great price. It is in brand new condidtion and is warrenteed. I couldn't pass it up even though I knew that the HP was marginal, I too don't go at high speeds and thought it would work well for my needs. I have a camp on an Island in the Boston Harbor near the Boston Light. Please let me know on what you decided to do and how you made out. Thanks.

I think the 115 is marginal but will work ok for general cruising and fishing (assuming you aren't planning on pulling heavy skiers, loading the boat too heavily, etc.). I have the 130 on my 2002 19 Tournament and it works just fine (almost 10 years and more than 600 hours largely running in the ocean). It is substantially heavier than your engine. I think your boat weighs in the same range as mine, and I don't know whether the difference in our hulls has any effect. A lot of the 19s from my year had the Honda 130 as the normal alternative choice was the 150 Yamaha hpdi 2 stroke (or even the 200 hpdi).
I have a friend with a 19 from the 1980s that has a 115 Yamaha 2 stroke, and it works fine. The power is marginal but it works for cruising around and fishing.

Being as you have the 115, I would put it on and try it out as I think you will be ok with it. Expect a cruise of 18-22 mph and a top speed near 30. If you decide it is not enough power after living with it for a while, you can look for a 150 hpdi.

My scuppers are at the water line with my 1997 192 and the original '97 Yama 150 SW Series. I would like to repower with a Yama 150 4 stroke. I am thinking the extra 60 lbs will bury the transom and sink the skippers. I have 2 batteries and a full oil reservoir in back.
Does anyone have a 94 or later 192 with a 150 Yama four stroke? Does it float high enough aft?

I think you will be ok...remember, the oil tank is coming out.
you can add the motor then trim the boat to suit by adding ballast in the forward coffin. it won't hurt it any if you have to add 75lbs up there. it might even improve the ride.
If you have to under-power invest in a stainless steel prop. It will improve both hole-shot and top speed.
Why would you under power this boat ? They are tanks. I have a 1994 192 Tournament with a 200 hp Evinrude Ocean Pro. Runs great on this hull. Not sure about the 4 stroke, but I would opt for the larger 2 stroke. 150 to 200 hp. Get one used. The new Freedoms have a 150 4 stroke, but that will cost some serious dough for a 4 stroke. Will cost more than the hull is worth if you are talking a late 80s early 90s 192 Tournament. Good luck.
Sorry for double posting. If cost is an issue, which it is for me (3 kids and all that comes with that) then you may want to wait a bit and pull the trigger when you can afford the right sized motor. But again, I think if you look at a used 2 stroke, you could find enough juice for a great price. Good luck!
I am very happy with my 2021 Suzuki 140 hp on my 1987 Tournament 19. It has plenty of power. I had a 150hp. Johnson 2 stroke. I don't notice a power deficit. I do notice DRAMATICALLY increased gas mileage.
