That's a bit harsh - especially when you don't know the level of experience of the other people responding. It's very possible that others have had LOTS of experience with LOTS of boats and can safely make a good inference as to how the boat should handle. If you want to dial it in to that last 1%, sure - but it's not really an apples to oranges thing. It's more like a Macintsoh to Red Delicious thing.

I would have to disagree. I think you’re taking it personally Dennis. If you look at his question he asked for Seafarer owners with similar motors. You chimed in with a different boat and a two-stroke.

if you think a two-stroke has the same torque as a four stroke and other models/brands have the same gear ratio, you are mistaken.

PNW, you may have the same motor/boat/prop combo, but I don't think you are having the exact same experience. What are your numbers with the 17M? Mine gives me 40mph at 5000, and his apparently needs close to 5000 to stay on plane.

I can comment as I've tried your exact same prop with the same boat/motor. (Power Tech OFS4 15.25 x 15 (per prop gods)). I tried it once. Had your exact same experience. The pitch is too low. I took it off immediately. Yes it's better traction but I'd like to try a 16 or 17 p to run it. I was getting 25mph at 4500 rpms which is to totally unacceptable to me. Brand new hub BTW. Terrible MPG.

I know the conventional wisdom is to drop 2p when going from 3 blade to 4 blade but dosen't seem to apply to this prop. Over hyped in my opinion.

In fact a friend hit a rock with the prop and on the way back we got the same performance LOL.

I now am back to my 3 blade 17p. I'd like to try a higher pitch 4 blade but don't have the $$$ to gamble on getting the right pitch. BTW my motor is mounted on top hole. I have rough bottom paint.
It's my opinion based on experience your motor is too low. I repowered in 17 and the Grady dealer put it on the top hole. My performance was not up to par. I then moved it to the second hole better. I was running the saltwater II SDS 17 pitch 3 blade prop. Still couldn't get my motor past 5600 RPM. I put the 4 blade on it and the RPM dropped to 5300. Talked to Ken and like I said he thinks the motor is still too deep.

Ken is generous and will swap props for the cost of shipping. I spoke with KY and his motor is hung on hole 3 and his boat purrs. My original motor I think was on hole 3 and the 3.3 4 stroke spun the OS4 at 6,000 RPM. Mounting height is critical here and too low you are increasing drag ..it's enough drag between 1 or 2 inches in depth .. I have experienced and it doesn't matter which motor you have . I am moving my motor up one more hole .

I just mounted my new 17 pitch 3 blade Yamaha on my 1997 seafarer, f225. Excited to try it as the boat came with a a 15 pitch Yamaha 3 blade. With the 15 I could easily pass 6000rpm. Cruising at 30mph would be just over 5000 rpm...

I've moved my motor up twice and each time was game changing. Might go one hole higher yet, waiting to see how the 17 does on Thursday. My guess is previous owner got motor installed, they mounted it as low as it could go. Then pitched the prop so it would move...instead of lifting the motor.

I had tried to order a 16 pitch ofs4, but they seem to have supply issues or the local guy I ordered it from is useless.

As far as correct prop goes, you're going at it wrong. You need to prop your boat with a light load, not full battle gear!! If you prop for your current load, you will be underpropped (spin up faster, over rev, reach max RPM with less speed) with a light load.

My 2004 228 with 2004 F225 at1300 hours with 4 blade OFS4 15.25 x 16 runs out at 6000-6100 RPM and 41-42 GPS/MPH with 2 people, 56 gallons of fuel, no curtains, calm lake. I'm mounted in top hole on bracket and 3rd hole down on motor bracket.

I asked this before, but I don’t remember the answer. If I want to slide my motor up one more hole, are the threads inside the bracket fixed, or do I have to open it up and get a socket on the bottom nut?

Bazzturd, out of all these comments only you and I have the same motor/boat/prop combo and the exact same experience. I woulding put much stock into comments from people with different motors/boats and the same prop. apples to oranges.
I don't think your comment was harsh. I am taking all with a grain of salt but those with the same same or at least same with F250. I do appreciate the replies from all though.

What 3 blade 17P are you running? What is the lowest RPM you can plane? Do you happen to know your 3500, rpm, 3800rom and 4000rpm speeds?

Did you buy your boat out of Florida from Ingman Marine? I was looking at one very similar to yours listed by them and never pulled the trigger because of a difficult seller.
No, I bought mine as part of a salvage sale insurance write off here in British Columbia north of Seattle in November 2019.

Glacier, you got to pop the top and put a socket on the nuts . I investigated this and was going to do the work myself . Wife was not happy at thought of me possibly dropping my motor . lol. you really need to detach the entire thing from the backet and then liberally put silicone or 4200 into the mounting hole on the bracket to stop water intrusion. The best way to do that is to get the motor fully away from the bracket . I was going to buy the lifting kit for the motor but in the end I am going to take it to my boat people in Greenville,SC and ask them to raise it up one hole.

Mines in 3rd hole down on the outboard, top hole on the bracket. It made a big difference in performance!

That is my goal. The 4 strokes are optimized to run at 6,000 RPM. Motor height is critical in getting optimum performance. I love the low end and mid range performance of the 4 blade over my 3 blade props. With the 228 and the bracket, it's my experience you get better low end performance and dock performance with the 4 blade. I get better following sea handeling characteristics too. You get more bite to keep waves from pushing you especially if you go through inlets with standing waves, you need to get the nose up and need to plow through the waves.

Nope, you are not wrong. The 4 blade is an improvement in all seas, but you have to know what you are after.

I need help! I own a 2000 GW 228 seafarer I repower with a 2021 Suzuki 250 2 years ago. Long story short offshore the prop shaft broken in half and bye bye prop. Now I am having trouble finding the prop I need. Trying to look over paperwork and nothing is listed but the engine. And I need to know the pitch for the prop I need for my boat.
It was running great no issues WOT I believe was 40 at like 5500 I can’t remember to be honest but more or less around there. Please help thanks!

I max RPM in the low 5k's at low 30kts
something is very wrong if you have a 15" pitch prop and only max out in the low 5k's with a F225. that motor should run 6k at WOT. assuming your "low 5ks" is about 5200 and you get 200 rpm per inch of pitch, you would need to drop to an 11" pitch prop to hit 6k. obviously that would be absurd.

if i had to guess, either the engine is weak, the boat is heavy, or there is too much drag

I'd ask Don Davis if he knows the prop specs on his boat as he has one similar to yours. If he doesn't, or anyone else on here, try Ken at Prop Gods.
