I agree, in my search's of 228's I've seen pictures of kickers that looked like they were hanging off the swim board.i do not a have a kicker, but there is a few different styles brackets, the best/strongest I would think does not mount to the step, but to the transom.
I like that idea. You could also consider something custom welded onto the main motor bracket.
I like the idea of custom welding a bracket to the engine bracket. Like some boats do with power poles.I think your step is mostly incompatible with normal kicker brackets. You might find one that's more like an offshore standoff though that would work - it would have to run over the top of the step though.

Is the kicker a short shaft?
Is the kicker a short shaft?
Is that full width swim step factory or was it installed aftermarket? Can a 9.9 Yamaha be mounted on this swim deck? Or do I need to install a mount on the transom?
Don't know, I bought the boat in June I think it came that way from factory. I'm going to look at a Yamaha T8 today. I think I will go with the mount that KY posted. Then I'm going to hook up a remote steering system. (Hopefully)Is that full width swim step factory or was it installed aftermarket?
Picked up 2004 Yamaha T8 yesterday from a guy in Coast side fishing club. Been sitting in his garage for years. He never installed it on a boat. I fired her up today and and it purred so smooth with a steady piss stream. The tilt button doesn't work but I'm sure that's an easy fix. I'm going to call about the mount later today I'll update post as I progress.
Absolutely that was a big concern how long it sat on a engine stand. I ordered parts for a water pump and service. Please fully service it!!! Top to bottom. Sitting for years is not a good thing. Things dry out and get brittle. Glad it started for you though,,,,,,
