I'm looking at two different Grady's, one has a 2004 Yamaha F200 and the other has a 2006 Yamaha F200. I've read everything I could find (probably too much!) about the corrosion issue, but I haven't been able to confirm whether or not the 2006 is susceptible to the same exhaust corrosion issue as well. Is 2006 new enough to get in front of the exhaust corrosion issue with the rumored new coatings they started putting on these engines? Price difference between the two is 4000 bucks. It's really tough to research a "problem" that yamaha doesn't recognize. There simply isn't a lot of company guidance on corrective actions they took to fix the issue since they don't recognize it as a problem in the first place. Should I buy one or the other, or does it even matter? Should I not buy either? Any advise would be appreciated.

2006 seems to have been the transition year for the newer mid sections. So you won't know if the engine will have a problem without inspecting the dry exhaust tube at the very least. Yamaha seems to have used up their inventory of older mid sections by sometime in 2007. My F250, which was manufactured in May, 2007 was OK at 500 hr. I'm going to take a look again this week when I drop the lower unit to do the impeller.

If you have read everything about the corrosion issue, you already know that just inspecting the exhaust tube with a lighted borescope is not alway sufficient to detect corrosion around the oil pan area. But if you only see a few salt spots and no holes in the exhaust tube, you are probably OK.

I would steer clear of a 2004 V6 unless the seller can document that the mid section has already been replaced or the price is low enough to factor in the cost of replacement. Engines that have only been used in freshwater never show corrosion problems. But if you intend to use the boat in saltwater, it will just be a matter of time.
