Networking Garmin gpsmap units

I have been reading and planning and I’m thinking of pulling the trigger on a second screen… 1042vsx, it seems like I will only need to run a network cable and a power cable to the second unit and everything will communicate and work in tandem with my primary unit. Am I over simplifying this or is it just that simple? Any help would be appreciated!

Not sure about the 1243, but should be the same a the 7 and 8 series units.
As you described it, it works with my 7408 and 8410.
However, I am not a huge fan of the 12nn series and I paid the higher cost for the 7 and 8 series GPSMAP MFD's.

What is the first unit? Same?
In addition to Garmin marine network you will still need NMEA2000(assuming you have things on an N2k network). Also, the 1042xsv has a built in sonar what sonar and xducer do you have now? You may or may not be able to have 2 sonars running at once

1042 is an older model. Knob No touch screen slower screen and less resolution they are discounting them to clear inventory

Currently have a 1042xsv, Yes on N2K with auto pilot and a airmar b164 1KW transducer and Garmin radar, I was planning on going with an 8610xsv

The b164 is a traditional CW (non-CHIRP) 50/200kHz 1 kw. That is really good for deep water and reading bottom well while running.

To complement that you could get a GT52 or GT56UHD transom mount to give you CHIRP clear vu and side vu. They are HighWide at 455/800/1000 khz and will give you excellent side vu and bottom readings in 500'

The transom mounts don't read as well when running but are great for trolling, drifting, finding wrecks.

Use a Stern Pad to mount one.


The 8610 will network with the 1042 no problem but be aware their 10" screens are different shapes
