New 2019 engine on a 2023 GW?

Is it possible that a new 2019 engine might be on my new 2023 GW? The engine says it only has 13 hours, but when I was scrolling through looking at warning codes, none were active but there was Check Engine indication from Sept 25 2019. How do I verify the actual manufacture date of my engine?

There should be a decal on the transom clamp showing the manufacture date. I think mine is on the starboard side.

They don't put manufacture dates on Yamahas anymore. They haven't done so for years.
It is possible that the PCM was manufactured and tested in 2019.
That said, the dealer should be able to get the date based on the serial number.
Having a two year difference is not unusual but four sounds like a lot.
It may not be a big deal but make sure your engine warranty period is what it is supposed to be.

Yeah, doesn't have the year...just a serial number. Having a pre-covid new engine might not be a bad thing...but seems strange to me because there was a huge outboard engine shortage the last few years. If this is actually a 2019 I wonder why it never got used.

The bill of sale doesn't list the engine year, just the serial number.

He said with new engines the year goes with the boat. Since its on a 2023 boat it is technically a 2023 engine with the normal Yamaha warranty.

This is correct. It's the same way with Mercury (maybe all of them?). Your warranty starts when you purchase the boat... or more accurately, when they submit the paperwork to Yamaha - which "could be" slightly later than your purchase date.

That said, it would be strange to ACTUALLY have an engine that's been sitting in a box for 4 years. Doesn't make sense - that engine would have sold a LONG time ago with how sales (and lack of availability) have been over the last couple of years.

I imagine there must've been a bit of a backlog during the last couple of years when boat manufacturers weren't building boats anymore and the outboards were just sitting around. That makes sense, but I thought the problem for the last couple of years was a shortage of engines. I guess my only concern is that my engine was potentially sitting around in a crate for 4 years. I've been a fleet maintenance manger for about 30 years. Moving parts sitting around for years not moving is not a good thing.

Suzuki has a 5 year warranty on their outboards, of which as long as they started the warranty from the time of the boat purchase and not from the year the motor was built, I wouldn't have any issues with it.

I called Yamaha customer service and they verified that the engine was built July 2022. I feel much better now. However, they couldn't answer why there is a Check Engine warning from 2019 in the Warning Manager section.

I think there is still a mfg date stamped somewhere on the block.

There is no "Model/Year" anymore. All outboard makers did that precisley because they don't want to have to discount "old" new inventory. New is new no matter how old it is.

If the model makes a big change, they change the part number. The range of serials will trace back to the year of assembly.
