Had a chance to test our the new twin F250 4.2L engines yesterday. Was very happy with the power and speed of these new engines. I previously had 2004 F225 which had to be replaced because of the infamous exhaust corrosion issue which had also spread to my power heads. WOT throttle gave 4900 RPM and a top speed of 51 MPH with 4 adults and 3 golden retrievers and 2 full tanks of gas. 51 MPH on a Sailfish is screaming! Lots more mid range power from the F250's too! Big investment but great engines.

Once you're fully broken in and you think you're turning the right screws, it would be interesting to see what your expected cruise and burn numbers would be, relative to the well known 282 on F225's numbers. Agree that 50+ knots sounds excessive in a 282!

Is the 4900 RPM the ideal red line with the 4.2L motors?

I think the WOT is spec'd at 5500 RPMs. I am still using my props from F225s - the new props from Yamaha are back ordered. Can't figure how an outboard manufacturer can run out of props in May? Kind of like McDonalds running our of burgers :). They are supposed to be in-stock mid to late June.

I repowered my 2006 282 last August. Only difference is going from 3.3L F250's to the 4.2L. To keep costs down I opted not to go with the fly by wire controls which made the repower very simple. I have been running my old props while waiting on my new ones (yes, they have been backordered since last August). I have only been able to get 5400rpms at WOT, I am hoping to see at least a 400 rpm gain with the new props. We shall see.

We did the same, stayed with mechanical controls, I think the quote on the wire controls was 12K higher than the mechanical.

Congrats on the 4.2s. I love mine...all 3.3 hours on it. My WOT is also 5400RPM. That motor should turn 5800 to 6000 RPM. I am turning a 15.25 x 17 power tech 4 blade prop. I am thinking based on consultation with mid Carolina who did the repower to drop an inch in pitch. The gear ratio is different than the 3.3 liter. I am going to tinker with changing props to a lower pitch model or I am switching back to a 3 blade per Grady specs.
