New Yamaha 300 wouldn't go over 2000 RPMs...

So I took the new boat out on a canal cruise with the family and some friends. Idle speed for about an hour looking at houses. Took it out in the sound and put the hammer down and it wouldn't go over 2000 rpms. I texted the dealer and said to completely shut everything down and start over, so I did. Engine off, batteries off, even pulled the emergency shutoff chord. Turned it all back on and it worked perfectly.

What happened? What caused the engine to go into some sort of limp mode?

No way to say. Get it scanned. Anything else would just be guessing. Could be anything from an actual engine problem to a flaky sensor to a loose connection to a battery voltage issue.

Those engines have fairly intelligent ECUs, they know to warn you about service intervals so they know the hours. Is it possible that it was enforcing the low RPM break in period? Is that a thing now?

Whatever, you are going to *love* that 300, great engine. I hitchhike on a buddies Canyon 271 with twin 300s, makes me want a bigger boat (not really, I love my 228 but that 271 is a sweet ride and the 300s are a big part of that).

Yep, it's pretty sweet. Got the boat up to 47mph. Not blazing fast, but then I didn't buy this boat for speed...I bought it for comfort. And man it gets on plane fast.

"47mph - not blazing fast"? I think that's around top advertised speed for my 228 with a 250, I've had it up to 43mph WOT. I don't get that people say that is not fast, it's fast enough that if anything unexpected happens you are going to have a very bad day. Most of my runs in the Pacific are 20-25mph, I just came in from crabbing a few days ago at 34-36mph, that's screaming on our ocean.

Yeah, I am not a speed demon. 47 is plenty fast. I have some buddies with big CCs who brag about heading out into the Gulf at 65+. My best friend just crashed his seadoo doing about 60. Hit a rogue wave and went right over the top and separated his shoulder and did significant damage to the ski. 25-35 mph is my sweet spot. Any faster than that and relaxation turns into laser focus...

Remember ICW rules and the slower you go the bigger the wake...... until you have boat below hull speed (whole boat in water, no raised bow)
around us they have introduced a few new speed limit zones around marinas and restaurants.
I'm on Atlantic side so a little more restricted I'm sure but at high speed you don't navigate you just follow a "track"
