Shade tree shift coupler wasn't tight and would backoff loose when shifting forward

True.. I just replaced the water pump while I had the lower out..

Question.. I'm thinking of using a thread locker to make sure it does not come loose again.. Any recommendation?

First thought is red stuff?

Blue is the more permanent sealant. What part is that exactly? Is it off the upper shift rod, or is it the internal shifter part that engages the shift slide? That part slides and doesn't turn I think .What year is the motor?
I want to get educated.,

It's the part that slides unto the lower splines on the shift shaft

That part threads unto the shaft that goes through the mid section to the top end.

Wow. Never seen one come off here in fla. I use 271 locktite for anything I don’t want coming loose. Here in south fla, we have terrible salt corrosion issues. We call it “Florida locktite”.

Is it possible to drill a hole, tap, and put in a stainless set screw with a female Allan head like a railing fitting?

Is that JBWELDed to the shift shaft?

Might want to check SIM or Boats.net for a replacement shift shaft.
That will be the long term plan. Power head has to be removed to change that shaft I believe. If I can loctite it on and get a season out of it. That will be fine.

Yes, power head has to come off to change shaft. May want to have the exhaust tuner checked when the time comes to pull the power head. You can check it now with the lower unit off by looking up the exhaust column and seeing if there is any white substance ( like little white salt balls) on the inside of the tube. Google search 225 exhaust tuner problem n lots of info will pop up.

Update.. Now shifting forward and reverse.. There is. Slight clunk shifting into both gears. Is this normal? Idle speed at 600rpm

Slight clunk is OK assuming it always did that!
