one of my F225s on my sailfish makes a whining noise (sounds similar to a squeaky alternator belt or pulley on a car) after coming back to the dock after an outing.

the noise is not loud and most times i cannot hear it unless i go back to the engine well.

sometimes it makes the noise sometimes it does not....

i described it to my mechanic who told me not to worry and that he has heard this b4 and that it relates to a brass sleeve (or something like that) in lower unit.

any of you guys ever come across this sound and by chance know what it is?

btw, he said if i wanted to get rid of the noise he could fix it next spring.

what year? the circa '02 f200/225 had a bushing issue that would result in a squeal every now and then. the mechanic and yamaha indicated nothing to worry about. they shot some lub in it when i first heard it. yamaha said nothing that would fail. ron

F225

I have 02's and had a similar noise earlier this year. My noise went away when I put the boat in gear. It was just a bushing that needed grease. I had the water pumps done and asked the mechanic to grease the bushing. He used an extension on his grease gun and with the lower unit off he put grease up into the engine where the shaft fits into the motor. The noise was gone and still is.

I've got the same noise - it comes and goes. I asked my dealer about it and he said it is nothing to worry about and he would take care of it next year when the water pumps are due for replacement.

Yup...It's a bushing...Shift shaft I believe - Usually only makes the noise in neutral or low idle. The problem is too tight a tolerance on the bushing. They can remove it and give it a quick tweak with a file or replace it with one that has a higher tolerance (New Spec.) If yours have never been done you may be able to get Yamaha to do it under the service bulletin. This was an issue in 2002/2003 models.

Replaced complete lower unit on F100 Yamaha.
Has similar squeak...maybe the same bushing problem?
