So My poppet valve kit came a few days ago. I installed it today and ran the motor in a barrel of water. After 45 seconds the pee stream started and looked strong to me. At 2 minutes and 48 seconds the temp. alarm sounded. So I have new thermostats and new poppet valve. The guy I bought the boat from is adamant that there's no more then 40 hours on the current pump. I bought a new pump kit the other day I guess it's time to throw it on??

The pump could’ve been installed wrong several years ago I bought a boat and motor saw the work order from the shop in the north bay with all the parts took it apart to where the fins were in the opposite direction From the rest that we’re going in the right direction just a thought!

Damn.. Definitely over heat issue going on. I was going to mention I think I have a spare impellar and some other parts I could mail you.. That would be faster than ordering..but you need a new housing.. Dont reuse that one.

Yes it was still pumping. I bought a new water pump kit the other day just in case I needed it. Yeah I need a new housing for sure. I can't figure out what this black crap is but it looks fried

That looks exactly what happened it melted ,I’ll probably take the thermostat out and try to flush the system to get any rubber particles throughout the cooling system very low pressure !!!
Probably do some more research how to flush it out without doing any more damage !

What concerns me is that it was peeing and you still got an alarm.. Is that correct? I'm not aware of a flow sensor or similar.... Might be more issues to address. Maybe seasick or spark have more info...
Yes that is correct. When I took it to the lake 10 days ago it had a steady stream but the alarm sounded. When I tested it here today it didn't start to pee until about 45 seconds after start up
Idle it would go off when I hit about 5 mph. I don't know how that thing worked at all.
The damage to the water pump is due to lack of water. If the hose falls off, weak water pressure, or you suck a bag for 10 seconds or so, the impeller melts into the housing. It depends on water to keep it cool. No water n it gets hot extremely quickly. I always use the flusher that supplies water from both sides. I also hook up a second supply hose to the flush hose located under the cowling. On some motors, one hose is not enough.

The best aftermarket replacement for your motor is 18-3396-1. Sierra part. This one comes with the housing, plate, gaskets, o rings, impeller, and bolts. Sierra makes great water pumps. not so great fuel filters though.
When assembling housing, I use 3m 847 to seal the o rings so they don’t move and crush during assembly. Be sure not to block the little groove on the housing under the small o ring. (1st pic) this is the pump prime vent.

I seriously doubt any rubber made it to the power head. When impeller melts, becomes a gooey mush n sticks to the housing port and does not make it up the tube. Maybe use a wire brush on a stick to wipe out the inside of the copper water tube near the pump. Also blow a good amount of compressed air backwards into the p hole on the motor to blow anything that may be in the tube after the wire brush cleaning.

I don't want to hijack this thread but it is making me want to do a similar thread about my 2020 228. I need to go out more and learn more, I can tell you I have learned so much in such a short time. I was starting from close to zero, 2 years as a ride along in a Triumph, GW is different, you need to actually know how to drive that boat, if you do it wrong, it hurts. Trimming the engine makes a huge difference in our pacific waters.
Give me some time and I'll do the same thread. Spoiler, I have looked and I think Grady has the 228 dialed in, I don't think there is that much that changed. It is a great boat.
As MrIdiot, I'm learning, the more I drive that boat the more I like it. I took #2 son out yesterday, it was choppy on the way out, he said "Dad this sucks, I don't like this", we got to fishing and he got a nice fish, we drifted for a few hours and the seas calmed down. We went in at 38mph and it was fine.
He walked out this morning and said "Hey, Dad, when can we fish again?"
I don't know how much of that is the boat but he likes the boat. Thank you Grady White, my kid wants to fish.
