Outboard bracket flange

Aloha,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me what this flange is for on my 25 ft sailfish. This boat originally came with 200hp Yamaha, but I repowered with 150 Suzuki. The fairings on the Suzuki bend split open twice so I am wondering if this is something specific to Yamaha

Every Grady bracket has one of those..... not sure of the reason for it.

I've never seen it, and my Grady bracket doesn't have it. A lot of motors get water spraying around the cowling, in certain speeds and conditions. Maybe it was to deflect that.
hmmm... mine has one. what year is your boat?

Hmmmm Did some google searches. Late 90s up I don't see the lip. My 92 has one though. I assumed they all did. Maybe 2 stroke 4 stroke difference??

Mine is a 1995. Original motors were 200 2 stroke Yamaha. I have 2021 150 4 stroke now. The oil pan fairings have ripped open twice. Just curious if those flanges might have anything to do with it

My 2000 228 bracket does not have one.

That's a good theory, too. Actually, probably more likely the answer than my thought since the bottom of the bracket is too high above the hull bottom to really be effective at helping hole shot.

I seem to recall reading that those extensions were specific to the Springfield bracket and were only used with OMC motors.

It looks like something that someone added to work as a stationary trim tab - a "hull extension".
I agree with Dennis. Looks like the spot where the trim tab is usually mounted.

It’s called a splash plate and is screwed into the bottom rear of the drive, the bottom of the drive rear edge has a recess so it’s flush. It was for Mercs and Yamahas only, JohnsonRudes 1989 and up have it as part of the motor. Per device bulletin 1C-86 to All dealers subject Grady Drive Information, dated Aug 23, 1989. I have Yamaha HPDIs but had Johnson’s original, no plate. What it does is lessen the water splashing coming up between motor and drive rear by closing the gap down. Probably more effective at lower speeds or coming off plane to lessen chances of getting up into motor. The OMC splashplate may have been a bolt on motor adder. The Grady catalog from 1992 for the Sailfish Sport Bridge photo shows the drive plates on a Yamaha rigged boat. If GW website still has the old catalogs, you will see it and its profile from the side, it only goes onto the drive a few inches.
