This is my first post on a forum, ever. Forgive me if I do not follow etiquette. I recently picked up my bother's 1983 240 offshore. The haul appears to be in great shape and I will be assessing the more difficult areas in the up coming weeks. Everything works all I need to do is repower. I have an endless list of questions but the immediate issue is the motor. I have access to a 2006 225hp Yamaha four stroke outboard. Its my dads. Its currently on his boat that has not touched the water in three years because of his haul. Great idea, let combine the two. I was wondering what anybody thought about taking two working parts, already paid for, and putting them together? Be nice.

225hp Suzuki. I know those four strokes can run heavier. I will reach out to Grady White to get original specs to see what the transom can hold. Of course there almost four years on it too.
That how I got the boat. Mt brother left the ears on the motor while running. Unfortunately he left the motor unattended and the earmuff fell off and blew the motor. I have the motor but wasn't thinking of fixing it since I have access to the four stroke 225 Yamaha.

I asked about what motor you had since that would help evaluate if the Yami225 is suitable. So assuming the boat ran well with the zuke and the shaft length of the Yami is the same, I would think you would be fine. You do have to think about hookups like gauges and harnesses. You may need to do a swap. The control cables may not match up either but in the scheme of things, that not a deal breaker.
That said, it may be advisable to have the Yami checked for the exhaust corrosion issue before you go through all the work to install it. If it has the problem you may want to think about repairing the zuke (although that will probably be more expensive).

Thanks for the advise. I have someone coming out next week to look over the Yamaha and give it a once over.
IMO, a 225 2-stroke = no problem. A 225 4 stroke with less than 4 liters of displacement, I'd do some homework before committing. A 3.3 liter 225 yamaha 4-stroke only makes about 208 hp and makes nowhere near the torque of a 2 stroke or 4 liter zuke or 4.2 yamaha.

No head even on body of motor. I took the cover off and just an empty space. Will probably part out what remains.

25 in shaft for my 1985 and 1982 Offshores.........my experience: my 1997 Yammi 250 pushed my 1985 Offshore at just about 40MPH with just me and a light load of fuel........My 2006 E-Tec 225 pushes my 1982 at 37MPH using half the fuel....and I never need to do 37MPH....I cruise at 25-30MPH very comfortably.

Tanks for the response. Around Baltimore I've seen Mercury 200 going for 2800 and 225 for 3500 with controls. Going to be shooting for the 225hp.
