Outboard Fresh Water Wash

I have an older outboard 86 suzuki that I keep at the a slip. There is no fresh water hose connector, I can only flush it using the muffs over the water pump. I cant figure out the best way to run fresh water through it when I am done for the day. How do you do it? Connect the hose and muff and trim the engine down into the water and run it. I am not sure it will run trimmed out of the water?

My son had the same problem with his Merc 150 10 years ago. I believe he put muffs and a hose on it dockside and ran it trimmed up while flushing with the muffs.
Check with s'more experts, but I think as long as the engine is getting a freshwater supply to it, it doesn't matter if it's trimmed up or down. The telltale sign is if water is exiting out the pee hole, your safe.

One more thought..
It might have trouble running at that tilted angle..It's possible the carbs could be affected..Unless someone more knowledgeable on this chimes in, I would see if it works.

This is a question i had too
What do you do to rinse the salt out of a 1997 225ox66trx? I spoke with a yamaha dealer and he said"DO NOT RUN MUFFS WITH ENGINE TILTED UP!!! what do you think

If you put the muffs on and turn the fresh water on why not just trim the motor down into the water, flush then tilt up and take the muffs off? Have not you flushed with fresh water, wouldn't the muffs and running fresh water keep the salt water out or is there another water intake on the engine besides the ones where the muffs are?

What does owners manual say?

I ran OMCs for decades, but them away wet, and never flushed them, no problems.

I change my stats every 2 years regardless. I was wondering if the salt could actually clog the head. i do notice some cristalization? on the stats when i anuall inspect them

I get the same and I flush motor with attachment provided.

I think the idea was to mazimize blcok/head life by mitiigating corrosion that may come on when older (not the design issues going on with relatively young V6 Yamaha Fs exhaust manifolds).

If so, the motor is finished.

You say yours is 1986?

Done very well so far! 25 yrs!

Damn good. We should all be so lucky.

Why bother now?

Didn't think you can run a motor with carbs tilted. Won't the carb floats close the needle valve? I'm hearing and reading that salt-away stuff is good. And, it helps prevent salt build up. So the advertisment says. I like to hear some testimony from the Great Grady guys.

And another thing. I have that fresh water flush fitting also. I haven't got a straight answer that it circulates water through the heads. I've read posts on the Yami forums about guys getting corroded heads and been flushing every time they come in.

I spend 2 weeks in the Keys every winter. I use the flush attachment on my 200 Yamahas after every trip.
My mechanic inspects the engine when he winterizes it after my trip and says there is no salt to be seen anywhere.
I don't know where the fresh water goes while in the engine, but as long as there's no salt residue, I'll keep doing it.
As I mentioned above, it was done with my son's Merc 150 tilted out of the water and it worked.

My old 2 strokes always ran when tilted way up. At low tide I would travel an inlet with the water inlets barely submerged. On an older and smaller boat than I have now but the principle is the same. I would think its fine to do that on earmuffs.
