hello everyone, I'm new to this site, so I thought id ask for help with an issue I have.. I have a 1990 overnighter 20 and being on a budget I currently have a Bimini and would like to replace it with a hard top aluminum framework and have more rod and net holders as well as something rigid for people to hold onto while underway, also maybe overhead electronics and lights etc... I work on boat electronics as a profession so that's right up my alley to wire it up to my needs.. I am in central eastern shore of Maryland so I'm looking for a used one or a more affordable way to do it then with a brand new one.. to keep the weight down I'm open to having canvas sumbrella material as the actual top instead of heavy fiberglass etc... I don't think I'm interested in a radar arch, I would like to eventually get/have made a Eisinglass enclosure.. my uncle is a machinist so if I could find framework from a similar style boat then I can have the foot pads and tubing customized etc..... has anyone done it this way or does everyone just buy the premade units from the NC company or Atlantic towers etc.???so I'm alll Ears!!!! I can post photos etc. if anyone wants to see the boat?! Thanks!!!

You can certainly do it the way you are thinking, but the dilemma is trying to find a used hardtop in decent enough shape to reuse... heck, it's hard enough to find a used hardtop, regardless of it's quality. Atlantic makes a hardtop with a lightweight panel - I have that one and have been happy with it. The only downside is that you can't mount anything directly to it - you either have to mount into the underlying structure, or add structure.
