Painting the deck ?

Replacing the fuel tanks and while I have her apart was looking at the deck panels which much of the non skid is worn away.
I saw the sticky about replicating the diamond pattern, to big of a job for me.
Any one have any advice on refurbishing an old deck?

RQ...if making new non skid is out....you have 2 choices...leave as is and clean the best you can or repaint the area...if you repaint, I'd use a 2 part PU type like Perfection to handle the abuse and last....other than that you are limited.

Reel Quick,
I have the same issue as you, and would like to paint the entire floor.
I was thinking about a paint with some sort of abrassive/sand for added grip.
Any one have expierence doing this? Pros? Cons?

I painted mine w/ Interlux Interdeck, which is a non-skid paint. You can use any topside paint w/ added grit from the Behr paint aisle or I've even heard of people just throwing sand in.

If you use Interdeck, make sure you get a drill mixer b/c the grit settles in the can and really needs a good mixing. I've been happy w./ the results, though I went from white gelcoat to light grey and its a good 15 degree temp diff in summer sun...so no more bare feet! Not a big deal, bare feet and fishing don't mix well anyhow.

You can put down a coat of paint, let it dry, then mask off the are you don't want the grip then shoot a coat and use a shaker to put down the grip while it's still wet, let it dry and finally shoot a coat or 2 over everything.

I decided on the Interdeck,I picked up 2 quarts.I hope that is enough.Of course we had 3 days of rain,so I`m off to epoxy the tanks today and hopefully get them in and the decks down by next week.

go to the classicparker.com website under the projects section. one of the guys on there just repainted his deck using interdeck and was very happy with the results. he actually posted a really in depth write up of the installation.

Hi RQ, I need to paint the topside deck of my 88 offshore. Would you use Interdeck again? How did it hold up? How did you match the color of GW gelcoat? Thanks

I went with the interdeck and it’s held up pretty well. I’ve gotten 6+ years out of it and though it still looks ok there are spots that say it needs to be redone. You don’t need to add grit to it, it has plenty. In fact if I have someone wearing surf shoes on the boat with black soles they leave black marks because the deck actually sands them off. The marks wash away easily though.

If you look close around the rope you can see spots of white where the paint chipped away. Other than that it’s held up pretty well.

I used Pettit Easypoxy when I did mine. It was about 5 years ago and is just starting to show a few small spots that could be touched up. Overall, though, very happy with it. I'm starting a little skiff project with my son and I've been eyeing up the Total Boat (Jamestown Dist) products. From what I can tell, they seem to do very well - and they are very fairly priced, too.

You could always use Kiwigrip. One of my boats has been a featured boat for their product for about 10 years. Very easy product to apply. Has pros and cons like everything. The deck was actually rolled by my son. I believe he was around 6-7 years old at the time.

I think for smooth decks and panels these products work well when the deck is prepped correctly and instructions are followed to the T. I am not so sure for diamond non skid molded in patterns. It's hard to get the low spaces prepped well. I wonder if a light soda blasting would work. I also have my doubts in these instances about durability. A lot of the durability of the above mentioned products is from the added non skid grit . That grti is hard and it gets the wear while protecting the paint from direct contact. Were any of the mentioned application done on patterned non skis gelcoat?
