Picking up shade extension

I have a friend that owns a fabric store so said he would have a shade extension made out of Sunbrella, or something he says is actually better and lasts longer. I am looking at like $50 for a 6' x 8' piece that is double sewn on the edges and has like 4-6 grommets along 2 sides (I do not need them on the sides, just where I connect them to the hard top and then to the PVC structure I plan to make for the bak.. or whatever I fabricate).

He is only charging me for the sewing, not the materials.

So, Navy Blue (white would get dirty)... and figured to maybe use Galvanized pipe or PVC and make a "U-shaped" device that went in the aft rod holders and across, for stability and also to lash the tarp to, extend it just over the transom, whatever the angle of the rod holders are....

Thoughts?

Sorta like the picture:

Picture #1 - sorta like this, but I was going to do a bar across the back connecting the two poles to lash it to to keep it from flapping in the wind and shredding.
Picture #2, would like to do this... simple enough, except not sure how to store the tarp when it is not retracted and not sure where to locate like a 5ft "blind" spring-loaded roller etc to make it roll out.

I like using the rod holders. I've done this with a 6X8 tarp to make a roof overnight (even on a good night you get the dew). Worked out fine. Cheap too.

Depends on use and budget. Picture 2 looks like a SureShade. I have a different version with the Manual Crank, yes, expensive, but installed myself and wanted something that would hold up while running. They had Specs for many GW and the matching Sunbrella Blue.

I like the second one Russ you can retract it when you go fishing if that's what do , if you don't fish the first one is ok too. I only use my boat to fish so neither are any good to me.
Whatever you do don't use gal steel, gal steel and boats in saltwater don't go together. You want marine grade 316 S/Steel and make sure it is NOT bloody Chinese .

I like the crank one, not concerned with manual or not, but 500 bucks is crazy .. would rather have poles and a tarp I unfold.

I can make the top one, just not sure... do I just roll it up onto a .. wait, that could work....lol.. sorry, was thinking as I typed. I could easily use tent extension poles... but then simply disconnect the pole across the end and manually roll it up. I would rather find / figure a way to roll it up as I slide the poles back in, but not willing to pay $500 to have SureShade make me one heh.

So, will contemplate it and let you know how it goes.

At the NY boat show, I asked about the Sunshade (electric model) option for a well known manufacturer's bigish WA. and it was...... $17,000!
That floored me until I found out what the Seakeeper gyro costs

In the March issue of Boating magazine, the DIY section shows the installation of a sun shade for the forward area of a DC boat. I also chocked when I read that the kit costs $3,400.. Yikes

That's why the poorman's shade gets my vote. You know after a couple of years either the motor goes or the shade gets damaged. Keeping things simple is the way.

This was our set up on our old trophy. 2" aluminum tubing in the rear rod holders and a $30-ish sun shade from Amazon. The whole thing was held together with bungies to cleats and rod holders. I wouldn't have trusted it up and running but it was supper simple to set up so we just took it down when we had to boogie.


Those sunshades are garbage. I work at a Whaler dealer, most of the newer pilothouse Conquests come with the manual versions. After a season or two they get incredibly hard to crank out and crank handles all seem to be corroded pretty badly. The electric versions are worse, they bind, the motors corrode or burn out due to the high resistance. I'll admit I live in the northwest and most customers only use them a handful of times a year, they may not have problems if they are used more often, but for that price?! They are probably in the top 5 most common warranty complaints.

I heard a similar comment from one of the sales persons for a different manufacturer who uses an Italian company (I think) for their shade. Itt has folding arms instead of telescoping tubes.

We had a cover made locally, but bought the rod holder posts from Birdsall. Used the same track as our cockpit cover.

Well, guess I got beat up for spending $3400 on a Sureshade, first world problem I suppose. But, I am fishing mostly it is out of the way while running and fishing. Just did not want to mess with the klunky poles and straps. Boats are not cheap for sure.

We looked at the Sureshade, but just had other issues. We would have to modify our rod holders on the top and the mounting location for the crank so it would not interfere with other installed equipment. Loved the idea, but in the end decided poles and shade could be put up in just a few minutes when needed. Just made it easier for us. For others it may work out fine.

That looks like the ticket. Very nice set up and reasonably priced. I like that it ducks under the hardtop.

just got a quote for the Pic #1. $1900 ill buy sunscreen for that much!!! found two pole set and a tarp for $75 on amazon.

Do you have more info (how much) or link for the poles. I need the same exact thing for mine.

These fit my budget will see of they are too lightweight (dont plan to use in extreme wind), may give them a try and see how it goes (will drill hole in tube and pole holder to put a pin so they can't get pulled out) and same on top somehow.
