Ping Pong ball flow max scuppers

Has anybody install these Flomax ping pong ball style scuppers? My issue is the Grady scuppers are a metal thru hull style that’s going to be very hard to remove.

In fact, I have to drill through the flange of it if I want to install these with it there.

I think they made to screw into the fiberglass with 5200 around four screws.

I’m sure this is a common problem for our boats. Has anyone installed these?

Just remove the flapper on your original through-hull and heat the hinge area carefully untill it gets relaxed. then let it cool in a slightly negative attitude. Grady put good bronze fittings on. I would advise against replacing with plastic. Especially if it is from China. Just remember....it's a boat. Expect to meet up with a little water now and then.

I agree - I wouldn't remove the nice, bronze scuppers. You could replace the flappers easily enough - new ones are more flexible and seal better.

Interesting approach above by Halfhitch... I think you're talking about creating more pressure by the flapper against the scupper? How long does that last?

Downside to ping pong balls... they're more likely to get clogged with weeds and not work. Personally, I've used them in the past and didn't really like them for that reason.

But... here's an idea if you're insisting on using them. Cut a ring out of HDPE that is larger than the scupper and attach that to the boat. Then cut a second ring of the same OD as the first one but with a smaller ID so as to give a mounting surface for the ping pong ball mount. This way you don't have to remove the bronze scupper.

Can you get larger ID ping pong balls?

Those Ball scuppers are sized for the motorwell drains not for fitting over 1 1/2 thru hulls. Dennis' idea using concentric rings of Starboard is a good one though. Thumbs up!

Great idea with the rings Dennis.
I have brand new flappers, so they’re not gonna get any better than they are. They’re pretty much underwater a lot of the time because of all the weight.

I may try that with the starboard rings. Definitely don’t want to drill into the bronze thru hulls in case I want to remove the ping-pong balls. They have an easy twist removable clean out with no tools, so shouldn’t be a problem on my trailer boat.

I should look for bigger, diameter ones that would be a timesaver. Not sure they exist. I got these on the closeout deal and they actually match the hull.

Thought! buy Stern pads and drill a big hole. then clean off the bottom paint and stick the stern pad

Adding... if those are thick engouh, the back side could be routed/relieved to allow for the depth of the bronze scupper. Easier than the concentric rings. Good idea Skunk!

TH marine makes an inline ping pong style check valve, would be installed in the drain line between the scupper and deck drain. Pretty sure someone makes a deck drain with the check valve built in.

I ended up putting a new plastic thru hull in because i could not get a bronze one locally, let alone a bronze one that the ping pong ball can mount to.

That ball in the elbow of the scupper looks like it would cut down on the flow rate considerably. Why wouldn’t it also float if there is standing water on the scupper.

Looks like Sea Choice makes some big 3" ball scuppers but they don't have the twist lock clean out feature. They would have to be screwed to remove then resealed which sounds like a pain. Plus I don't like that brand.

The ring idea sound pretty good! I have bottom paint so I could easily fill some screw holes with thickened resin then paint if I change my mind. "easily" is all relative I suppose.

I like the idea of the spacer set up glued to the hull. Seems like the best way to get ping pongs on bronze thru hulls. Also like the twist off idea, i take mine off when its on the trailer for extended periods so they don't block up when washing the boat.

If you have the clearance (they don't have the opportunity to get knocked off, not sure why they are not an option.
