Question for GW 306 Canyon Owners

Hi,

According to the Yamaha Performance Bulletin for a 306 Canyon with twin 350s the performance should be a shown below, which is mostly reflected in my real world experience with the boat.

Whether you have twin F300s or F350s, how close would you say your performance is to below?

Also, what would you say your top end is in calm conditions?

I have a Marlin w/350's. Not quite Apples-To-Apples, but it's the same hull.

My figures with the extra weight of a cabin enclosure are better than your stats posted above.

3600RPM 33MPH 1.4 MPG
3700RPM 34MPH 1.4MPG
3800RPM 35MPH 1.4MPG
3900RPM 36MPH 1.3MPG
4000RPM 36-37MPH 1.3MPG
4100RPM 37-38MPH 1.2-1.3MPG
4200RPM 38-39MPH 1.2MPH
4300RPM 40MPH 1.1MPG

I've owned the boat 3 years and haven't opened it up yet.(no need) but I've had it as high as 5000RPM and was at 50MPH. I'm certain it would run 52-54 if I firewalled it. For reasons I can't explain, I don't care.

If your stats are 300's, that's probably about right. If they are with 350's, something's off.

One more thing; I always tend to look at the Yamaha Cluster for my speed, rather than the GPS on my Garmin Chartplotter. The stats I typed above are the Yamaha MPH on the cluster. They are close, but the Yamaha MPH reads a tick slower than the GPS, maybe 1 mph, so factor that in as well. Still, a Canyon w/350's should be faster than your numbers.

Hope this helps; Those Canyons are great looking boats.

I think your spot on Bill. I pinned my Marlin with 250s a few times in her young days and hit 50-52MPH granted calm seas, low fuel and minimal crew weight. I could care less about speed. Just being on the water is enough for me.

Not the same but I have a Canyon 271 with twin 300. Don’t have all the data but at wide open throttle it at 6100 rpm and 54 mph And 1.1 mpg

The usual questions;

Maybe a prop difference? I have the standard wheels that came with the 350's, although I can't tell you the size or pitch. They are 3 blade. (Bought boat/engines new.) Do you have bottom paint? How much ancillary gear aboard, etc.

From reading your post, it sound s like you are an experienced boater, but I'll ask anyway...Are you trimming the engines out properly? That is huge if you're not. My Marlin runs best at 4-5 bars on the Yam trim gauge.

If you didn't buy new, is there a possibility the engines are rigged to high or too low on the transom? There are several mounting holes so they can be rigged higher or lower. This is unlikely, but worth asking.

I'm just "throwing darts at the wall " here.

The boat has the standard props and the engines look to be mounted correctly. I will have my local GW dealer verify it when they paint the bottom.

The bottom is painted.

There is a spotlight, two VHF antennas, a RADAR and FLIR camera on the t-top.

Not much other gear, as I tend to run light.

Perhaps I am not giving it enough engine trim or too much tab.

FWIW, my boats have always performed within a hair of the published performance figures. they have the specifics included in the perf bulletins so you can compare to your setup. also, remember that they are very skilled captains so the boats are most likely trimmed to perfection. a big impact. good luck, ron
