My old Lewmar 600 windlass seems to have died. I bought a new Quick Genius 600 windlass to replace it and I have a few questions. First the main wires out of the motor look like a very heavy gauge, manual say 7 awg, but I think it looks bigger like 4 or 5 awg. The manual for my Sailfish says it has 4 ga wire for windlass power. The windlass on the boat was put on after the boat a year or so old the previous owner told me. The wires running to the old windlass does not look like a 4 ga wire though. If the boat did not come with a factory windlass would this wiring as in the manual not exist and I will have to replace everything?

Also of anyone that has a quick genius 600 do you know what the two small wires off of the unit are for? The manual is not very descriptive and hard finding photos online.

A quick peek at the Quick site shows that the 600 requires a 40 amp breaker but the Lewmar needed a 50 amp breaker. The good news is that assuming the old installation worked OK, the wiring will be fine for the new windlass. Of course, you should use a new Quick relay. I only see two wires off of the motor in the instructions and they connect to the relay.

Managed to work on the new windlass some today. I found that the factory did run a dedicated 4 awg wire from the battery to the helm. It uses the common ground and then either 6 or 8 awg wires run from the helm to the bow. I am going to use all the existing wiring. I ordered a new 40amp breaker instead of the one that came with the windlass. The new one would not cover the old hole int he dash, so instead of making a new one I ordered a 40amp in the same style the old Lewmar one was for a direct fit.

If anyone plans on installing a Quick Genius I did find the threaded studs that come with the package are very short and will not go through the pulpit, so I am going to track down some stainless rod this week in the lengths I need.
