Re-Trailering for a 228G

Despite regularly rinsing off, my 2006 Magic Tilt trailer (model TALS2452) has corroded/deteriorated beyond economical repair. So, I'm working with a local dealer on acquiring a new Continental (model A2260BT). The Magic Tilt is rated for 5,200 pounds net capacity (6,000 GVWR) and has performed well enough through its (shortish?) life. The Continental is 1 foot shorter (26' vs 27' for the Magic Tilt), but rated for 5,800 pounds (7,000 pound GVWR) and I'm fitting it with torsion axles, all stainless fasteners, and Kodiak stainless brakes. Tow vehicle is a 2005 Ford F-150 XL w/5.4L engine, 2WD, limited slip diff, and 9,800 pound tow capacity.

Long preamble to two short questions:

(1) Does this Continental sound like an adequate replacement trailer?
(2) Should I add target bunks to the new rig? (Magic Tilt had them and I have no experience using a trailer w/o them.)

As long as your trailer is rated in excess of your fully loaded boat, you should be fine. I had an aluminum Continental trailer on a previous boat and it tracked great and held up well.

Absolutely get the target bunks. If you have to load in a cross wind or current, you'll be glad you have them. It's best to mount them on the trailer with the boat loaded. They aren't supposed to carry any weight.

Thanks, Doc! As it turns out, my dealer anticipated my needs and had already added them to the order - clairvoyant fellow!

I bought a Continental CTA 2360 for my 225. It was too short...in order to get the tongue weight right I had 6-8 inches unsupported off the back. For some reason, they measure them short. In fact, I sold a brand new Continental 2260 out from under the boat that I bought in August for the same reason...it was too short. If you are going Continental, up it one size to their 25-60.

I have an Ace built ally trailer for my 228G, GVWR 7000 lbs tows very well with a 200 Landcruiser 4.5 lt TTD. I had the trailer custom built with heavier I beams, extra crossmember , all S/S fasteners, ally bunks, target bunks, Kodiak S/S brakes, hydrastar actuator,torsion 3500 lb axles, 15" radial tyres and suffix slides instead of carpet on the bunks. Sometimes I tow 300-400 miles, very stable on the road, I sit at 110kmh+ (about 70mph in your language).
