I had the same the same issue on an older Johnson 74 HP. It was over my head, they had to remove the motor from the transom in my case to do it correctly. Your set up may be different depending on the motor.

You can find rebuilt kits for less than half.

Check trimandtilt.com

The mechanic told me it's $1,600 for the part and three to four hours labor he gets a $125 an hour I'm new to boating first time using this guy and I want to make sure he's not ripping me off. I think he smelled blood in the water

What is wrong with your trim. Does the trim motor run? Does it leak fluid? What he quoted is for a new complete unit. You can get great used Working units for around 600 bucks or replace the trim motor in your unit for 400. Removal of the unit is not too bad if it fits out without removing the engine from the transom. Some do n some don’t. Need close up pics of unit to tell.

I believe that model comes out without removing motor from transom.

This is a reman company. The ad is for Optimax, but I would call and check price on your model.

Sparkdog has a point. Are you sure you need a new trim unit? What are the symptoms? Does it move at all in any direction, any noises? It could be a simple relay needs to be replaced.

I agree with above comments, take it apart and determine what’s wrong. If nothing else is obvious send it to someone familiar. The links to the repair shops look like a good alternative to new replacement. Lots of marine mechanics in my area are quick to replace trim unit without trying to fix because they are not aware of hydraulic repair.

What are the symptoms/problems?

Everything works okay he says it's going to have to be replaced though said maybe I can get this season out of it but he doesn't now. everything works as it should when I had the boat inspected before I bought it that's what he told me

Well, in that case leave it be. No one is a fortune teller. It may not be an issue for years. Is there rot or something that would lead him to say that?

Yes the nuts on the bolts are rotted works fine though I'm going to try to get the season out of it because the boat has to come out and I just got it in. I was told 2 Grand to fix it just thought that was a little high
