Replacement Live Bait Pump

I went to replace my live bait pump on my 2007 Marlin and found my new pump has two wires while the old pump had 3.

What is that third wire for?

Will it harm the switch or whatever to use the two wire?

Well, brown to brown and black to black works fine. I've no idea where the red wire goes on the original wiring. Slapped Deutch connectors on for the next easy replacement.

Can you not trace the red wire? Do you have a second switch by the livewell, as well as an on/off at the dash?
I would test the wire you cut off of the red with a light, to see if it is hot

That's interesting. I did some research and Pentair Shurflow says the models are identical, -020 model being oem and the 021 model being the aftermarket model. Both show only two wires

Could the extra wire be to power a light for the baitwell? Seems like there should be some paperwork with the new pump explaining the wiring.

I bought the pump in 2014, no paperwork but I did download a pdf. I only insured the two wires worked, and the red wire didn't work with either the bro or blk.

I'll have to see if there is a light in the livewell. Good suggestion, I had to retreat as the day got too hot. I give up in the bilge about 83°.

Ilwaco, WA has had trouble getting live anchovies but I understand they have them now. And so the rush to replace a pump. My old port doesn't have live bait. It has been so long since I used the livewell I don't recall if it has a light. There is only the dash switch.

Thanks for the ideas on what to check. I spent too much time dealing with removing caulk to be ready to recaulk.

Yes the red wire goes into the pump. I'll take the pump apart and have a look. Good idea.

Two wires are used. Red is cut off at the wire gland. Pump was made on a Friday afternoon with stock on hand.

Failure = simple corrosion.

The next pump will be the type to plug in a new motor and done.

So I'm going to assume the boat had a 3-wire cable (ged, brown, black) and that the pump may have shipped without a cable. When the pump was wired they pulled the cable inside and hooked up the brown and black. The red was cut-off and unused (probably an indicator like bilge wiring).

That wire was part of the pump. It must be spliced somewhere. Color codes and wire type not GW.
