Are those simply screen material sewn into canvas/vinyl with Velcro for attaching to the window frames?

Mine are imbedded in a rubber gasket with plastic flange that fits the outside of the window. Although your suggestion may have merit... the windows he talks about open inward so velcro inside doesn't help.

No it a separate screen built into a plastic or vinyl frame which bends when you put it in its frame
