Hi,

This is my first post so forgive me if I violate protocol. I recently bought a GW Sailfish 282 and the original stereo died shortly after. Its my first boat that isn't a workboat so I'm not experienced with alot of the accessories. I'm looking for recommendations for replacement stereos. Here is what I'd like:
- quality sound, but it doesn't have to be top of the line (due to budget).
- iPod/iPad compatible
- Remote (ability to control from the helm). I hear that the original wiring isn;t compatible with modern receivers. I'm thinking a wireless remote may be the way to go because I've read that wiring a new remote is a big job. Comments/Thoughts?
- Use existing wiring
- simplify installation - I read a post that some guy installed a receiver where the orginal remote was. That sounds like a decent idea, but I'm thiking that I'd then have to worry about it being exposed to weather and spray.

Any ideas, thoughts, advice, suggestions, etc. are welcomed.

Thanks,
Tom

Tom,

I had a 270 GW Islander and ran the stereo head in upper e-box. Out of the way and dry. I made bracket similar to a VHS bracket from the ceiling. I then had a remote at the helm.

I recently added a Fusion Stereo to my Marlin 300. It has a door for the ipod and I control the tunes form a remote at the helm. The remote is key when running. Lastly the only choice for speakers is JL Marine audio. I am going on 8 years on a set. They are awesome.

We have a new to us 2003 282 which had an older Jensen stereo installed with wired remote (I think the boat originally had a Kenwood unit from the factory). It only worked sporadically and had a CD stuck in the slot. No Bluetooth, USB, etc. I replaced the Jensen with the same size Clarion M303 which fit precisely in the same under the gunnel mount in the cabin. This is a modest unit with Bluetooth, USB/Ipod, SirusXM , etc. Unscrew the mount and it drops down to allow full access for de-installation/installation. The Jensen’s harness wires had the same color coding as the Clarion’s which made splicing in the Clarion harness much easier. Instead of installing a wired remote I mounted the Clarion MF1 RF remote where the wired Jensen remote was. The MF1 does not require line of sight to the stereo receiver in the cabin and can be used while sitting in the cockpit or up to 100’ away. Works great.

This is the exact combo I was planing on getting! Thanks so much for posting. It looks like the color coding may be different that the origin al Kenwood, but I'll figure it out. Thanks again!

I have had a clarion cmd for the last 5 seasons. I have it mounted in the upper electronics box. It has both ipod and satellite capabilities which account for most of the music we listen to on the boat. However I end up using both the ipod and satellite through the aux input. I ran the wire from the stereo down to the helm electronic box. I find it much easier to control the ipod with its own controls, then through the clarion. The satellite I control through my simrad NSS which is at the helm.
