I have a leaking fuel tank in my '92 246G Explorer. Have a new one built as we speak and I am hoping to properly mount this one to reduce the chances of corrosion over time. Some say to coat the tank (with??) and others say to leave it alone. The issue seems to be where the tanks sits on the strips of rubber. Moisture gets in and without air to dry, it corrodes. I have recently read about "gluing" (5200) strips of a composite material to the tank to eliminate the water on aluminum contact. This composite material is placed wherever the tank contacts the hull.

Any other thoughts/suggestions on how to do this right??

I would coat the tank with Coal Tar Epoxy. It will out live the boat. If you put the wood wedges back in you can seal them or replace with a non-porous material. Check you coffin lid core while you are at it.
