I have found a great deal on a Suzuki 300 HP. It has a 30" shaft not a 25" shaft. Will this be a issue for me?

Too long, over HP rating results in insurance problems, too heavy for 2 stroke designed transom,,,, to name a few.

Better choice. You are within your specs for your boat. Just make sure everything is good with your transom and bracket. What is the weight comparison between the Zuk and your current power? Scupper issues if it's a huge difference.

What’s the rating for your year 228? Thought 250 wasn’t the max until the late mid to late 90s

Here you go....supposedly 280HP for your year...Meanwhile my 2000 is 250. Wonder if it’s a weight thing with motors weighing less in 88 than in 00.

280 is 280,,,, be it twin 140's or a single 225. The 225 was the biggest that Yamaha had back in 1988. Throw some sandbags on the transom to equal the weight of the Zuk and see how she sits in the water. My buddy had a '88 228 that he put my old F225 3.3 on and had no issues. I fished it many times after he repowered an didn't notice any ill effects from the four stroke.

I have a 1999 228G Seafarer with a 600 lb 250 Suzuki on it and it’s awesome, a buddy with the same hull and year just put a new Yamaha 300 on it and it’s awesome as well. These newer 4 strokes are heavy compared to the older 2 strokes but all work on the incredibly well built Grady transoms, in my opinion.
I just checked and the 1999 Yamaha 250 2 stroke is just under 500 lbs.

I May try the sand bags to see how she handles but my guess is the 80 Lbs want make that much of a difference. Found a low hr 2016 SUZ 250 for $5200. Hard to turn that down.
Thanks guys for all your advice and info.

Buy the Zuk,,,hang on to your existing motor, try the Zuk out and see how your boat handles it, if it's to much, re sell the Zuk, and hang old motor.

Buy it, You'll be great. I hung a heavier 4 stroke on mine then another 120 lb Kicker.
