I have a 2004 232 Gulfstream which I love, but seems underpowered with a single Yamaha 225. When we have a full boat, I struggle to get on plane.

Does anyone have an idea of the cost to upgrade to a single Yamaha single 300 or 350?

Is there any value in the old 225 with 1,600 hours?

Thanks for any help.

That boat has a wide beam. I don’t think it would run well with a single. Twin F225’s will be to heavy for her. I would look for twins 150 or 200’ 4-cyl if I was you. Lot of folks Re power with Suzuki now with better warranty.
My 265 Express w/twin 2003 F225 clocked at 2200 hrs. 100 hrs maintenance on the dot, exhaust jacket replaced and yamalule every fill up helps.

It will run fine on a single 300.
For me the downside is that it is a heavy and fairly wide hull for its length and tight spot maneuvering is tougher. No need to to spend the money for twins and all new rigging.

My (bought new) 1998 232G runs fine on my F250. To me, twins are only a consideration for offshore and big crews. Yes, I would love a F300, but my fishing needs on the Chesapeake Bay do not require it. Maintenace cost on one engine is high enough so double it and realize you now have 2 engines that could break down. If I were a wealthy man, I would have twins, but I am average joe blow. Good luck and make the right decision for you! Today's economy is killing us all.

Motors are hard to come by right now so.... yes your old motor has value but getting a new 300 quickly will be tough.

Suzuki has DF300B and DF350 that have contra-rotating props. That might help with the handling with a single. In 350, the zuke is lighter than Yamaha and nobody likes Yammie 350s.

Twins are nice and twice the price to maintain. A single 300/350 will probably get better ecomony than twin 150s.

Hi Patrick
I have the same boat 2004 gulfstream that i purchased with a 225hp Yamaha. to go with twins you have to change the bracket and that will cost a lot by itself.
2 years ago i repowered and got the 300hp.The bill was about $31000 with the new digital control and gauges. She does about 42 mph WOT and cruising at 29mph 4500 rpm and 2.4 mpg. the 300hp give me plenty of power and its all you need.
Hope that helps.

someone i know has the DF350's used commercially. he's happy with them. my personal preference is more power (i had a 232 with twin F200's). i'd rather have more power and use less, than have less power and need more. just me. good luck with it. ron

Thank you for sharing the cost info. That is very helpful.

Hi Patrick,
I repowered in 2019 to new 4-cylinder Yamahas. I know there would be a lot of rigging to do plus new/different bracket to go from single to twins. My point is that it sounds like some of the others he that have gone with single 300hp single see similar performance that I do with my twin 200's. I may get a bit more top end (max at 47) but the 2.4mpg and cruising is good. I cruise closer to 4000 rpm at 30.
This is my $0.02.

Hello - late to post but I was sniffing around a suzuki repower last winter on my 250ox66 98 gulf. Ended up having a baby so that plan got put on hold!! Would assume prices have gone up but quote below in Mass.

300Hp with Single Prop (639 lbs) Repower Estimate: $27,500 plus tax
300Hp with Suzuki Duo Prop (727 lbs) Repower Estimate $30,300 plus tax
350Hp with Suzuki Duo Prop (727 lbs) Repower Estimate: $32,000 plus tax

I'm looking to repower my 226 that I just purchased. Frustrating story that is still a bit raw. Anyway... I can tell you in my very extensive searching that you're likely to get over $10k for that engine selling it on Craigslist. I'm in the PNW and I would guess you'd get close to $15k here. There's just nothing available in the 200-250 hp category. No new stock so people will pay more to have a used motor. So that helps defray the cost of the new one.
