Need advice on my 2004 Tournament. I’m the second owner. Currently has a Yamaha F225 with new exhaust kit , but smoking, overheats and runs rough. Looking to repower with new Merc or Suzuki. What would you buy? Both around $20-22 k
I’m on saltwater in the Chesapeake.

I'd inquire as to how much a Mercury 225 FourStroke series motor with the digital throttle and shift option will weigh as well as cost. Their standard Mercury 225 FourStroke series outboard only weighs 475 lbs, compared to the Suzuki 225/250 which is over 600. Your current Yamaha F225 per google weighs around 583 lbs, so it really just depends on your budget, reputable dealerships in the area that you trust and if you want to save weight. One other issue is that your current hull is only rated for 230 hp, which a 225 hp outboard would technically be the largest that you can go with. The other problem is that I don't believe the Suzuki 225 has the digital or fly by wire throttle controls, if you really wanted those. Interesting though because in 2007 they increased the maximum horsepower ratings up to 250 for the 205 Tournament when the rest of the boat looks identical. Not sure if you could call up Grady White and ask about that as well as potentially increasing the horsepower level, but I imagine you might be able to get away with a 250 if you wanted to. It it were me personally, if your current setup sits fine in the water line and you don't really have any issues with the weight, then you could go with the Suzuki 225, or maybe even the Suzuki DF250AP which has the digital throttles. If you were trying to save some weight, I think the Mercury would be the route to go. If/when I ever go to repower, I think the Suzuki DF250AP will be the route that I go because it's not much heavier than my current setup, it has the digital controls and Suzuki offers a standard 5 year warranty vs Mercury who only offers a 3 year. And, I like the look of the Suzuki a bit more in that the Mercury looks a bit too aggressive for me. Just my thoughts of course.
