Comments welcome on choices listed below; any relative cost and/or economy/reliability/ease of maintenance data especially helpful.
Re-powering 2005 Sailfish currently equipped with Yamaha F225s with 4 bladed 17" pitch props. Current setup has adequate power, planes easily, but it sure would be nice to burn less fuel.
Use is primarily Pacific out of Westport; salmon, halibut, tuna (out to ~70 miles). Current motors run great, but, cost of maintaining increases over time and new should offer better performance, range, digital controls and peace of mind. Use perhaps ~200 hrs/season.
Typical trip runs at 13-30 mph, depending on ocean conditions. Ability to plane at low speeds while heavy (full fuel, live well, 400#s ice, 4 guys) and best cruising economy in those speed ranges are key considerations.
Choices (no particular order):
Honda BF250:
Suzuki 250/300 AP:
Yamaha F250/300:
Etec Gen 2:
New Mercury 3.4 Liter V-6 225:
Interesting new option from Merc with little info to date, but....at 3.4 liter slightly bigger displacement than current 3.3 Yamaha but only 484 #s at 25" shaft length. If power = or better than current and taking ~250 #s off the transom how might that translate to performance? Any experience with 4 cylinder F200 Yammies or DF200 Suzukis on a Sailfish or even an Express 265?
Thank you.
